Thank you for your feedback regarding your purchase of Scotts Lawn Essentials Sun & Shade Mix.

For best results when using this product, follow the steps below.

Prepare the seedbed: Prepare the seedbed by having the area plowed or disked, or by using a rototiller to till the top inch of soil. If leveling is needed, it can usually be done with nothing more than a shovel, wheelbarrow and garden rake. Adding topsoil is unnecessary, unless you need it for filling low areas. TIP: Don't work the soil too finely, as this makes the surface crust over and dry out more quickly. Soil particles from pea-to-marble size are ideal.
Sow the seed evenly: Use a Scotts hand-held, drop or broadcast spreader. Spreading by hand is not recommended, since getting uniform coverage is difficult. Be sure to fertilize. Applying Scotts Starter Fertilizer will help new seedlings develop faster and grow thicker, greener lawn. After applying seed and starter fertilizer, rake the area lightly to work the seed about 1/4 inch into the soil.

If there is anything we can do to help you have a 5-star experience, please contact our Consumer Services team at 866-436-7645 for assistance. Scotts

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Lawn Essentials Sun & Shade Mix and appreciate your feedback.

We understand it can be frustrating when you put in the work to reseed an area and the results aren't what you hoped for. We're here to help you get those results next time!
Here are a few tips that have helped others get their lawns looking great:

    1. Water, water, water! Newly seeded areas need to stay consistently moist for weeks. Even a short dry spell can kill those little seedlings. Think about giving the area a light watering two or three times a day for the first few weeks. After that, keep those seedlings watered regularly. The soil should feel moist, like a wrung-out sponge.
    2. Seed needs to touch soil. Our research team says if you just lay seed on top of old grass, you'll only get about 2% germination. If you're seeding over an existing lawn, rent a slit seeder if you can. If not, give that old turf a good raking or add a thin layer of topsoil before you seed. And don't bury those seeds too deep! A quarter-inch of topsoil or lawn soil is all you need.
    3. Sunlight is key. Too much cover, like straw or soil, will make those seeds rot or limit germination. Let the sunshine in!
    4. Watch out for weed control. Herbicides and lawn diseases can be tough on new seedlings. Make sure you haven't used any weed control products in the area. Those chemicals can stop those seeds from sprouting. And remember, herbicides will kill off new grass.
    5. Temperature matters. Soil temperature is important for germination. For northern grasses like bluegrass, ryegrass, and fescue, the soil needs to be at least 55°F. For
