Questions

1 - 10 of 55 Questions

Q: Will this remove the salt taste - we have hard water and although we have a softener I do not like the taste of the water.

2 Answers
  • A: This filtering system is to kill bacterias so that you can drink the water.  It doesn’t change its color, taste, smell or anything else.  Hope this helps!

Q: Is it possible to mount the unit outside?

2 Answers
  • A: The electrical components on this are not waterproof. I would not install it outside without having a shelter for it.

Q: We draw our water from the lake, it has tannins, which pre filter should we add before the 5 micron and uv system. Also our house has 1/2 inch copper pipe is it ok to step the 3/4 inch fittings the system requires down to the 1/2 inch right after the uv ?

2 Answers
  • A: We also draw water from the lake. I use a 5 micron then a charcoal filter before the UV system. And yes it’s perfectly fine to step down after the filter to 1/2. Just make sure you use a 3/4 - 1 ft metal fitting on both sides of the filter to protect from UV degradation. We used hot water tank fittings.

Q: We are on a well with hard water, should the water be treated via a water softener prior to going to the UV filter?

2 Answers
  • A: Yes, we have hard well water and we use a watersoftener , a water filter after it then a UV light.

Q:  Can this be installed using PEX?

2 Answers
  • A: You need a small section of copper pipe for the intake and exit of the unit, but the rest can be pex.

Q: Can the UV light be mounted horizontal instead of vertical.

2 Answers
  • A: The unit works equally well in either position (horizontal or vertical). So, yes you can install it either way, except that in a horizontal installation when the quartz dome is extracted for cleaning, you have to be extra careful not to break or chip it as it will be held by its end. Also, make sure you provide adequate horizontal clearance to extract the UV lamp and quartz dome and mount the ballast above the UV.

Q: Does it remove Giardia cysts?

2 Answers
  • A: The Rainfresh UV system delivers 40 mJ/cm2 of UVC (kill) dose. To put that in perspective, it requires only 10mJ/cm2 for 4-log reduction (>99.99%) of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts and Giardia lamblia cysts. In other words, Rainfresh UV unit delivers over 4 times the kill dose required to inactivate both Cryptosporidium and Giardia cysts.

Q: How do you determine if the GPM will be sufficient? Rainfresh has two models.

2 Answers
  • A: The answer of JAN 18, 2016 about bathroom count and house size is correct and valid, but there are some other considerations. The 'GPM' flow rate for UV systems is the MAXIMUM flow rate that the UV system can effectively sanitize the water. 8GPM is more than 2 standard household faucets at once so its probably fine BUT that assumes a high degree of water clarity. If the water in the house is cloudy at all (tanins for example) then the UV flow rate must be increased.

Q: Does system have to be installed with copper piping only?

2 Answers
  • A: Yes and no. You need copper piping on the inlet and outlet of the UV filter about 12" should do the trick. If you use plastic pipe the UV rays will deteriorate it and turn it to mush. I used 3/4" copper pipe with a screw on brass fitting to attach to the UV filter on the inlet and outlet and attached the copper pipe to my cpvc piping with two 3/4" sharkbite connectors. I can easily remove the entire UV filter system in under 30 seconds should I ever need to replace it including the sediment filter.

Q: What happens when power goes out? Is there some indication that the unit functions correctly after the power goes out (sometimes for days) and comes back on during my absence?

2 Answers
  • A: The electronic balast will beep if there is any problem at all. It keeps beeping until you acknowledge it. The only failure it cannot detect, is a power failure. In that case though, your well pump is also not likely running so this should be of only a small concern.
