Q: My 54-6908-8 router has worked flawlessly for years but now the carbon brushes have worn out and it will not run. Where can I get new brushes ? 54-6908-8 fixed base mastercraft router.

Q: How do I install the 1/4" collet? This router came with the 1/2" collet installed. I can remove the collet-nut, but not the 1/2" collet itself. Does the 1/4" collet nest inside of that? Thanks.
16 years agoA: To be more precise, the 1/4" is really just an adapter sleeve that slides into the collet. If you remove the collet nut, the 1/4" adapter should just slide out. Sometimes they are a little snug so you may have to push it out with an oversized phillips screwdriver (anything bigger than 1/4"). I sometimes get a 1/4" bit stuck inside it so to get it out without damaging the bit I'll push it out with an undersized robertson screwdriver (or anything smaller dia than 1/4"). I use screwdrivers because they have a nice solid handle to hold on to.

10 years agoA: Canadian Tire won't like this answer but 1/4" collet adapters are readily available at other sources. Google 1/2" collet adapter.

Q: How do I turn it on I purchased this unit approx 1 year ago. Never used it. I now have the time to learn how to use it. However, when I turn the switch on all I get is the LED lights. I do not have a manual. Is there a safety or another switch that I haven't found?
15 years agoA: Uh Oh, not good. manual should be there, and motor should start up along with the LED lights. Me thinks it's defective. Grab your bill of sale and go to CT customer service.

Q: why does the Router bit creep down slowly? Fixed Router #54-6908-8. As I was cutting a circle ... the bit was slowly being lowered. How can I lock the setting in so that it stays at the depth I set it for?
15 years agoA: Do not install the bit all the way to the bottom of the collet, leave it up about 1/8 of an inch and then tighten.(common mistake) I hope this helps. If need be, contact any woodworking store, they will verify this
