Q: Are these tools brushless and if not can you change out the brushes?

A: Similar to all 12V national brand cordless drills, the drill is powered by a 'brushed' motor. The 12V motor, again like national brands, is a fully encased motor. Once the brushes are worn through, the only option the User has to replace the brushes is to have a professional service provider to replace the entire motor inside the tool.

A: The two kits are difficult to compare directly. There are two questions, the first is the difference between 12V and 20V and the second is the difference between Mastercraft and Mastercraft-Maximum. In a head to head comparison 20v is more powerful and will often provide longer run-time than 12V systems. 12V on the other hand will deliver on ergonomics being lighter and smaller than 20V product, fitting into tighter spaces and easier to use by both men and women for longer projects. Trade professionals often have both 20V and 12V in their tool box depending on their needs. Adding to the complexity of this question however is comparing Mastercraft to Mastercraft Maximum. The two brands are engineered for two different customers. the new Mastercraft portable power tools launched a year ago have been developed for the “step-up” home owner or Do it Yourself customer who is looking for something better. If you are looking for improved performance and value vs. other DIY products, the new Mastercraft product line is sure to please. That said, the new Mastercraft-Maximum products that are only now starting to show up in stores, leading off with this 12V kit you have referring to (more to come shortly), are targeting the Trade professionals. This brand delivers on the performance requirements needed by Trade professionals. Not knowing your specific needs, but knowing how the two programs have been engineered, I don’t think you will be disappointed with either system. That said, to aid in your decision, you might want to ask yourself what “other” cordless tools you might want to add to your tool box. We now have more than ten tools or tool combinations that run off the Mastercraft 20V battery. This makes it very convenient to add a Circular Saw, Reciprocating Saw, Oscilating Tool, Impact Driver or Wrench etc. to your tool box, all supported by the same battery.
