Not Easy to Use

Bought this item as I was recently diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. It was on clearance when I bought it, and when I got it home to use it, I found out why. Difficult to place the can, have to hold heavier cans, generally not a user-friendly experience. Returned it. Maybe there is some trick to getting the cans to sit properly, but I couldn't get it to work consistently or easily.

Q: Does this can opener remove the lid like a traditional can opener, eg. does the thick edge of the can remain? Or does it slice off the top leaving the sharp top edge of the can exposed?
