Biggest tool purchase regret so far

I really do not understand the rave reviews for this saw. I "splurged" on it as one of the higher-end tools I had to buy for my Carpentry program, thinking I couldn't go wrong with a well-regarded Irwin. But it is one of the most frustrating woodworking tools I ever used. ..the large notches every few cm on the blade constantly catch in the wood. The overall quality (blade & handle) is decent and I like the fine-front-teeth feature but otherwise the saw is just plain horrible to use, even for the most basic crosscuts on very common clean softwood boards. I wish I could return/exchange it...would be happier with any half-decent cheap saw as opposed to this one. Would caution others to be careful of a lot of these reviews and just go with a more standard blade design from another manufacturer...fellow Carpentry students who spent half what I did, are much happier with their saws.

No, I do not recommend this product.

    Great Saw

I have always enjoyed using Irwin crosscut saws. The teeth are flared just enough to allow smooth sawing in hard and soft wood.

Great hand tool for small projects.

I needed something suitable for small projects in my home. I could not see myself purchasing a power saw. Power tools and me, my goodness, what a laugh. This was an option open to me. Easy to operate. Absolutely, no manual needed. PERFECT!!! The smaller teeth, at the end BONUS. Easy to start the cut with. The coarser teeth closer to the handle make it easy to proceed with getting the job done. Very effective. GREAT TOOL TO ADD TO MY SMALL COLLECTION OF HAND TOOLS.

    1 - 1 of 1 Question

Q: Rip or Cross cut saw? Can you please tell me if this is considered a rip saw or a cross cut saw? Thanxs! :o)

    • A: It's a slightly aggressive saw with a medium set so it excels at crosscutting however I've used it successfully for ripping.
