It needs a thermal cover. I've seen some that you can buy but I think you could make one out of construction foam. My tip-up froze up so quickly on a cold, windy day that it created a problem. It had froze the shaft and the fish spun the reel and tightened to top nut (spring) so far that it wouldn't spin. I discovered that it needed to be loosened quite by accident. I wish there was some instruction on the cover to show what to do.
