Excellent smoke/CO detector

Ours was coming to its 10 years limit and started warning us ahead of time. It's been working flawlessly and we definitely want to replace it with another. It is self-testing and gives a short monthly report (and a warning when it is about to test). The motion-sensing night light is a very neat feature for dark hallways. It's hard to go without once you've had one of those for a few years.

Bought on sale online.
Typically smoke detectors have a 10 year life span.
This one was already 4 years old when purchased...
I returned it, as I am not interested in paying so much for something that is nearly half expired.

Q: Will this unit function properly in the winter time in a non-heated garage? Will the cold temperature affect performance?

A: We do not recommend installing Nest Protect in the garage. Nest Protect should not be installed in locations where the normal ambient temperature is below 40°F (4.4°C) or exceeds 100°F (37.8°C). As garages are usually not heated or cooled, the actual temperatures experienced in there may go above or below the temperature range that the alarm has been designed for. Also, the smoke from engine exhaust fumes can also cause nuisance alarms and damage the sensors of the smoke alarm.

Q: Does the Nest smoke & CO wired detector link with other brands of detectors via the interconnect wire?

A: No. The nest detectors do not link with any other brand smoke detector via interconnect wire. These come with a cap to cap off the interconnect wire. They connect with other NEST smoke detectors via wifi. They can also connect to a nest thermostat and nest door locks and cameras in the nest app.

Q: What notice do I get when the unit expires and stops working in 10 years?

A: It will stop working 10 years from manufacture date. You get a note: Expiring Nest Protect. Replace your Nest Protect soon. All smoke and carbon monoxide alarms expire. Your Nest Protect(s) will stop working on: Hallway: Nov 29, 2023 Basement: Sep 9, 2025. I was surprised to learn that they expire and you get a small coupon ($10). I won't be replacing most of my units with new Nests

Q: does this product meet the ULC (Underwriters Laboratories of Canada) requirements of Quebec?

A: Nest Protect passed all the tests for certification in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. It's been tested by Underwriters Laboratories to comply with US and Canadian safety standards. Q: Does this product have to be connected to the wifi in the home that it is located in to send notices to the phone? of do you upload an apt or software to your phone and it allows you to monitor through your phone that way?

A: The Nest Protect would need to be connected to the home Wi-Fi network in the location of the Nest Protect in order to relay alerts through the app to your phone.
