Questions

1 - 8 of 8 Questions

Q: I put this mulch down in my flower bed in July....looked nice at first...now all my plants are dying....is this mulch made from recycled waste wood ? It seems as if something toxic is leaching into the soil.

  • A: More than likely this mulch is Cedar based. Cedar produces a chemical that is toxic to other plants that' why you don't see grass growing around Cedar trees.

Q: Would this be safe to use around a children's play area? Thanks.

2 Answers
  • A: Depends on the age of the child and supervision.  We have grandchildren ages 6, 8 and 10 and have pathways at our cottage made of this mulch.  Not sure that I would use it for younger children.

Q: Can I use this black Mulch around fruit trees?

1 Answer
  • A: Most black mulches use black oxide dyes and other supposedly non toxic agents. Probably not much leaching from the dyes or fertilizer put on grasses around fruit trees but sometimes it’s better not to chance it and go with natural.

Q: Hi. Would this be suitable for my pet-waste compost? I’m using microbial pods however I need materials that will assist with accelerating decomposition and mask door.

  • A: No this product would not be suitable for that purpose

Q: You have 1 bad review and 1 excellent review. I am using this mulch on pathways so how long does the color last?

1 Answer
  • A: The length of time the colour will last is dependent on weather. Excessive rain, or sunshine will fade the colour. Natural fading, and breakdown of the wood happens with all wood mulch products and will vary greatly with the elements.

Q: Is this mulch safe for vegatable gardens?

1 Answer
  • A: We would not recommend using it in a vegetable garden as it tends to remove nitrogen from the soil when it first begins to break down. Most vegetables require high amounts of nitrogen to grow properly, and will suffer if they have to compete for this essential nutrient. Also as your vegetable garden is constantly in flux, replant can be hindered by the cedar mulch. Cedar mulch can take up to 10 years to completely break down, therefore also posing the problem of tilling the garden bed every spring.

Q: Is it toxic to dogs? What is in the black colouring? Thx

1 Answer
  • A: Vendor's response: Our Black coloured Mulch is an all natural product made from clean forest bark. The forest bark has remained in a pile for several years and been allowed to naturally compost to a black color. No colors or dyes have been added.
