Q: Do you need to raise the resistance in the wiring to prevent blown fuses?

    • A: Actually LED bulbs have a much lower current draw. In some cars the turn signal circuits are designed to increase the flash rate to indicate that one or more bulbs are not functioning. This is accomplished when the left or right signal circuit is closed (signal activated at the turn signal stalk) and little or no current is drawn across the bulb socket, a relay trips to indicate an open ciruit (dead bulb) . This causes the flasher to increase the flash rate. Therfore if an LED bulb is installed and it functions fine no problem however if it flashes rapidly then a resistor can be added to increase the current draw preventing the relay from tripping. Basic Ohm's Law really . Both are 12 volts but most LEDs are low power say 3 watts while the factory bulb is say 20 watts. Since amps are equal to watts divided by volts the LED bulbs current (amps) draw is 3 watts divided by 12 volts = .25 amps where the factory bulbs current draw is 20 watts divided by 12 volts = 1.6666 amps> resistance (ohms) are equal to voltage squared divided by amps we see that the factory light has a resistance of 144V divided by 1.66666A = 86.4 ohms where the LED has a resistance of 144V divided by .25A = 576 ohms. Further since parallel resistance(R) = R1 x R2 divided by R1 + R2 a resistor of 102 ohms added in parallel to the LEDs resistance of 576 ohms would equal 58752 divided by 678 = 86.65 ohms Finally since current (I) is equal to voltage (V) divided by resistance (ohms) and both bulbs are 12v and both bulbs are now nearly identical in resistance both will have a current draw of 1.6666 amps as such the automotive circuit does not "see" a difference and all is well.
