Great Product and Good reputation from Coleman

Lantern works fine; it's durable and uses propane. Whilst all the materials used aren't optimal this is understandable given the price point. These lanterns are easy to carry around but are slightly more painful to use because of the propane tanks that are necessary to be attached to the lantern. These lanterns are quite bright; whilst they aren't up to spec in lumens as many modern flashlights or other light sources, this is understandable given that lanterns are not "modern" technology at all. People are complaining a lot about the fragility of the globe of the lantern; what do you expect? It's glass. It's not going to be made out of solid quartz or corundum. The people that are also freaking out about the "hazards" associated with these tools should understand in the first place that there's warnings throughout the manual and box for a reason; they're a fire hazard if used improperly and if you don't take precuations when using them. These aren't battery powered lanterns and they're not supposed to be battery powered, you're using a reliable fuel source that can be used in most conditions outdoors outside of extreme cold. Extreme cold is where using batteries becomes a problem; extreme cold will cause those batteries to die within an hour if you're constantly using an electronic product that isn't insulated properly outside. These lanterns are usable in extreme cold, whilst propane is less effective in extreme cold they're still usable. Another person said "Dangerous. Caught on fire." What did you expect? It's a gas powered lantern, if you didn't set up the mantle properly or you don't know how these work and you're just willy nilly trying to use them without any instruction yes of course they'll catch on fire, when you turn the gas output on and take a match to the inside or a lighter it will make a miniature "explosive" gas reaction that allows the inner atmospheric conditions inside the lantern to allow the mantles to incandesce. There's always going to be "fire" when you're starting these things up. If you can't read instructions or search up videos on how to use these types of lanterns then do not buy them. For the person saying no replacement parts available anywhere; there definitely is replacement parts online you're just not looking in the right places. There's an entire group of people that are hobbyists in collecting old coleman lanterns and lanterns in general. My only qualms with these propane lanterns is the size when attached to the propane tank, the lack of ability to refill the propane tanks which will gradually accumulate as non-disposable waste, the ritualistic safety precautions in setting up the lantern with the propane tank and disassembling which requires an extensive cool-down time before removing the propane tank and burping the tank and lantern before resealing it, and the requirement to keep the propane tank outdoors or in a well ventilated and infrequently used area of the home that aren't close to living beings. The size of these tanks are below the requirements that would define illegal storage of a propane tank so they can be stored indoors but its still another annoying point of propane lanterns and propane powered products in general, this isn't at fault of coleman at all and I still think their lanterns are incredible products. For a lot of these problems though you can just end up investing in buying a white-gas / kerosene lantern by Coleman, they're far more expensive but they don't produce as much waste, are cheaper to maintain, lighter to carry around, more versatile in what you can use with them, are more resistant to the extreme cold and have a ton of options of replacement parts online if you've managed to break anything as they're what most collectors tend to go after in these lanterns. All in all I hope that Coleman continues to produce their lanterns, gas-powered with white gas, propane or other fuels and battery powered lanterns. They're an incredibly useful and reliable set of products and I think they're a necessity for humanity to be able to keep having reliable products that can be around if electronic systems or power systems fail. They're an integral part of an emergency kit and for them to be discontinued would be horrific.

Yes, I recommend this product.

No Longer Supported - Do Not Buy!

I loved this lantern, but the globe just broke. I find out now that Coleman no longer support this model and have discontinued the globe. It cannot be replaced. They are dumping old stock in the Canadian market, but this is now a disposable lantern. It cannot be fixed.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Q: Is the discolouration on the top of the lantern normal, or is that a sign it’s running too hot?

  • A: I used mine extensively last summer and do not have any discolouration. I don't have it turned right up though as I don't like it very bright. Heat may be the culprit.
