Straps are the weak point

First off, the straps that come with this are pretty thin and narrow, and I have no faith in the clamp. I nearly did not buy it after reading another review, but figured it was user error. I was wrong; the first trip home had me stop and re tighten twice (loose ends were tied down so nothing moved thankfully). I replaced the straps with $20 ratchet straps that were 1/2" wider and rated for 500 lbs...just to be safe. Tested at 110kmph with 30km cross winds...no problems so far.

Don't risk it

I cannot recommend strongly enough that you DO NOT BUY this kayak rack. I purchased this rack and installed the brackets as per the instructions to the roof bars on my Nissan Rogue. I secured my kayak to the brackets using the supplied straps. I checked everything - the kayak was secure and there was no slack in the straps. I got on the road, and within 2 minutes the kayak was wobbling back and forth. I pulled over. The strap attached to the front bracket had come loose. I secured it again and double checked everything. Back on the road and within 1 minute, the front strap again came loose. As I attempted to get to the shoulder, the strap came completely off and flew onto the highway. The kayak broke free of the bow line and rotated 90 degrees to the left so it was dangling over the driver's side. It completely bent the back bracket and bent my roof bar at the back. If I had taken 5 seconds longer to make it to the shoulder, the kayak likely would have flown off the roof and onto the road. When you compare the straps that come with this kit to the ones that come with more reputable brands like Yakima or Thule, you'll see that these ones are about 1/4 the size and with much smaller buckles. They simply cannot handle the stress that a kayak being subjected to wind and airflow exerts on the buckles. STEER CLEAR!
