A Piece of Furniture

Beautiful piece of furniture…but that’s all it is. Neither myself or my much more techie spouse can figure out how to use it. Joining a local astronomy group but by then the boats that sail past our home will be out of the water. Disappointed to say the least.

First telescope to do some retirement stargazing. It works as it is designed to. I love looking into the heavens at night at camp.

Telescope

I bought this item and less than a week later I returned it. Whenever I look through the scope I can see the plastic things that hold the mirror. I don’t know if any one else had or has this problem but just thought I should write a review to make sure other customers don’t make the mistake I made. But very good staff and very easy to return.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Questions

1 - 9 of 9 Questions

Q: How many mm is the main lense on the telescope? Not the little ones that come with it but the one attached to the telescope.

2 Answers
  • A: FYI: This appears to be a "Reflector" telescope, meaning that there actually is no "lens", rather a concave mirror, which most likely has the diameter of 114 mm. warrlock

Q: What is the focal length of this telescope?

2 Answers
  • A: The focal Length is 1000mm, or 1 meter, making the focal ratio f8.8. The mirror is spherical, meaning that there will be some slight spherical aberration noticeable at high power. The 20mm eyepiece will give 50 power and the 10mm will give 100 power. A 32mm or 40mm eyepiece would also be useful, as low power will provide wider views for finding objects and scanning the Milky Way.

Q: Is Celestron Astomaster 114az and Celestron Cometron 114az same? If not, what's the difference between these 2?

1 Answer
  • A: The Celestron Cometron has a parabolic mirror and f4 ratio. The Astromaster is really similar to a poorly designed 'Bird-Jones' scope with spherical mirror and double the f ratio. Avoid reflectors with short tubes and long focal ratios with spherical mirrors if possible.

Q: When viewing the horizon along Earth, the images are upside down, Can this be corrected or are you stuck with it just for star gazing? Upside down image?

1 Answer
  • A: Please refer to your manual on page 10. The image orientation changes depending on how the eyepiece is inserted into the telescope. When using a star diagonal with refractors, the image is right-side-up, but reversed from left-to-right (i.e., mirror image). If inserting the eyepiece directly into the focuser of a refractor (i.e., without the diagonal), the image is upside-down and reversed from left-to-right (i.e., inverted). However, when using the AstroMaster refractor and the standard erect image diagonal, the images is correctly oriented in every aspect.
