Q: Is this oil 'wet clutch safe'?

2 Answers
  • A: Actually the above answer is not correct. the word "motorcyle" on the label does not indicate if it should be used in wet or dry clutch applications. While it is true that this particular oil is for use in a wet clutch, it is the JASO standard rating that indicates this. JASO MA is for wet clutch, and JASO MB is for dry clutch. Just wanted to clarify that for anyone else that might come along and read this... Source: https://www.lubrizoladditives360.com/understanding-jaso-ma-and-mb/

Q: I am looking for oil for my 2014 Suzuki KingQuad ATV. In the manual it calls for a JASO-MA oil, this oil says exceeds JASO-MA-2 spec's. Can I use this oil in my atv? And what is the difference between MA & MA-2 oil? thanks

1 Answer
  • A: Castrol always recommends following the oil specification guidelines of the engine manufacturer specific to your application. This includes using recommended SAE oil viscosity and ILSAC or API performance standard(s). This information can always be found in the owner’s manual or by contacting the manufacturer directly. According to Castrol’s lubrication guide recommended for a 2014 Suzuki LT-A700X King Quad ATV is 10W-40 meeting API SG and JASO MA. Castrol Grand Prix 10W-40 Motorcycle oil meets the requirements of your ATV and can be used with confidence. As per your inquiry regarding the JASO rating, the Japanese Automobile Standards Organization or JASO establishes test procedures to evaluate engine oil performance. These include tests to evaluate high temperature and low temperature deposit controls as well as a special test to measure valve train wear protection. The motor oils that meet the JASO T 903:2006 standard can be classified into four grades: JASO MA, JASO MA1, JASO MA2 and JASO MB. The classification is based on the results of the JASO T 904:2006 clutch system friction test. The JASO MA2 rating supersedes JASO MA1 and MA.

Q: Can you mix both grades of this oil together? For example if you use 1:1 10w40 with 20w50 oil = 15w45

1 Answer
  • A: Mixing different viscosity grades will lead to a mixed product that has not been tested and may not perform as expected. As an example, a 10W-40 is lower viscosity and typically performs well at lower temperatures. A 20W-50 is higher in viscosity and typically performs well at higher temperatures. Mixing 10W-40 and 20W-50 oils will not make a product that performs well at both low and high temperatures. You will instead make a product that falls somewhere in between. Depending on what is mixed, you may actually make a product that does worse than either individual product. Castrol motorcycle oils are specifically designed and tested to meet all industry requirements of their grade. Castrol always recommends following the guidelines of the engine manufacturer for the recommended oil (i.e. SAE grade, API rating and manufacturer specifications) specific to your application. This information can always be found in the owner's manual or by contacting the manufacturer directly. Castrol Consumer Relations

Q: Can I use this oil on CBR600 F3 1998 ? If I can, would you recommend 10W50 or 20W50

1 Answer
  • Castrol Product Expert

A: Castrol always recommends following the guidelines of the original engine manufacturer for the recommended grade and API specific to your application. This information can be found in the owner’s manual for the motorcycle or by contacting the manufacturer directly. When deciding on a formulation, you need to take into consideration factors such as, what type of conditions do you drive in? What kind of protection are you looking for? What is the manufacturer recommending? According to Castrol’s lubrication guide recommended for a 1998 Honda CBR 600 FE is the following: 10W-40 for all temperatures. You may also use 20W-50 motorcycle oil meeting API SG and JASO MA for temperatures between 32°F to >104°F. Castrol Grand Prix Motorcycle oil 20W-50 would be suitable for use in this application. 5W-30 or 5W-40 motor oil meeting BMW Long-Life rating LL-01. The following Castrol products meet the requirements of your vehicle and can be used with confidence.
