Clunky but do the job

These are heavy and a bit crude and clunky, and I wouldn't recommend them for serious long distance rowing or a situation where aesthetics are important. However, they do have their advantages for backup oars and for beginners. They are relatively easy to install and fit oars of a range of thicknesses. They stop unwanted movement of the oars in and out of the oarlocks and also keep the oar blades at a constant angle to the water. Pinned oarlock do the same job a bit more elegantly, but aren't available from Canadian Tire and also require drilling a hole into the oar, creating a weak spot (I have seen several broken oars from pinned oarlocks to prove it). To reduce play and rattling in the hinge joint, I found that taking the hinge bolt out and adding a washer or two works well. They are meant to be left on the oars relatively permanently. If clamping these down hard on oars made of soft wood, they dig in a bit. Being zinc plated, I don't expect super rust resistance, but it's not an issue if the oars are stored inside. They don't come with oarlock sockets, so it is a bit hard to predict the fit. Using oarlock sockets with a plastic bushing cuts down on the creaking noise.

Make part doesn’t fit the female part. It has to be modified to fit. Absolutely ridiculous. Don’t purchase these items unless you are prepared to drill out the female part.
