This product worked while another brand did not.

I needed to braze two aluminum 2x2 inch extrusion elbow joints together for solidity. I tried another brand which did not melt until the aluminum did. I bought the Bernzomatic AL3 rods and they worked properly. I used an infrared thermometer during heating of the aluminum with a MAP gas torch to monitor the heating process. It took longer than I expected for the aluminum to get up to 730F but when it was finally there, the application of the rod went smoothly like soldering. The result is a rock solid weld so I'm good with this.

Yes, I recommend this product.

maybe acceptable for hobby or decorative work

This product is not very useful for work on anything that needs to hold any kind of load or pressure. it might be good for soldering popcans together or something like that. I found that on thin aluminum lines, it would make a reasonable good looking joint, but the line would crumble right next to the edge of the solder. the line was new aluminum tubing. notes about the flux in other reviews are true: you'll have to clean material with a stainless steel brush before starting. I found it gave best results to actually tin the joint, and then wire brush in the flame to clean the surface through the molten solder, then apply a second run of solder to give a good finish. buy lots of you are going to try it, and you'll need a good mapp gas torch too like a ts8000. in the end your repair probably won't last, so probably best to just save your money and buy a new part or save up and buy a TIG :).

No, I do not recommend this product.

  • A: Yes you can, I used these to fill a large hole in an aluminum pipe. Just make sure you don’t overheat the tube otherwise it will melt.

Q: I need to repair a patio chair I believe is made of a white metal. Will this product adhere to this metal

1 Answer
  • A: It will depend on the exact metal of the patio chair. As most patio furniture is made from aluminum this brazing rod can be used. However, if you have not used aluminum solder in the past it is recommend you practice on scrap metal first if possible. When soldering please ensure that the joint is clean and to not overheat it.

Q: I’m considering using these to fill a few 1/4” holes in an aluminum boats transom, which is 1/16” thick sheet. I read someone who said they got warping doing the same. I’m thinking a Oxy/propane tor this to get to temp quicker. Will that work? Too risky?

1 Answer
  • A: Interesting project! Using the Oxy/propane torch will be too hot for this application and would cut through the metal. A TS8000 torch will have sufficient enough heat for this application but shouldn’t burn through.

Q: I am planning on repairing a crack on my aluminum boat. The crack spans between and around the rivet. Imagine the - is the crack and the o is the rivet. It looks like this --o---o---. Will this product work with a standard propane torch?

1 Answer
  • A: Yes, you could use those solder rods but we would suggest using MAP-PRO fuel instead of Propane.

Q: Will this product solder pot metal to aluminum? I am looking for a product which I can use to repair or modify model cars made from unknown metals (most likely pot metal).

1 Answer
  • A: Thank you for your interest in Bernzomatic products. Our AL-3 rods consist of aluminum and zinc. "Pot metal" also contains a lot of zinc, therefore the melting temperatures ( 850 degrees melting point of our AL-3) of these two are too similar. You may melt your material as well as the AL-3 rod. Standard solder ( whether a plumbing solder or more appropriate metal work solder) may be best due to the much lower melting point of 400-500 degrees of these solders. Q: Will this bond to brass, and if so do I require a flux

1 Answer
  • A: Thank you for your interest in Bernzomatic products. Yes, this can be used for aluminum to brass connections. When used on aluminum to aluminum connections, the rods are a special formulation allowing flux not to be required. When used for other materials, Yes, flux is required. A typical plumbing flux will suffice. If you have any additional questions please call 1-800-359-9678 or email: Bernzomatic@WorthingtonIndustries.com
