How to pick the right crate size for your dog

The perfect crate will allow your dog to stand up, lie down and turn around comfortably.

Step 1: Measure length

Measure your dog from the tip of their nose to the base of their tail while they're standing.

Step 2: Measure height

Measure your dog from the top of their head to the floor while they're sitting.

Step 3: Add 4 inches

Add 4 inches to your dog's length and height measurements. Then, use those numbers to determine the best crate dimensions.

Choosing the right crate size for your dog

How much room should a dog have in a crate?

When figuring out what size to get, choose a crate that has room for your dog to stand up, turn around, stretch out and lie down. Any more space than that will encourage your pet to sleep on one side of their crate and relieve themselves on the other.

How can I tell if my dog crate is the right size?

If you notice your dog is hunched when standing or sitting in the crate, it’s too small. If the crate is too big, your dog might seek out other places that make him feel safe.

What crate size should I get for my puppy?

Your puppy will need room to grow, so remember to think ahead and choose a crate that will accommodate their adult size.

Why is it important for a dog to have a crate?

Dogs are den animals and enjoy having a confined space they can retreat to, especially when they’re tired, stressed or nervous. Additionally, crates can help with house training and solve behavioural problems like chewing and barking.
