Just buy a proper torque wrench. Tried the 1/2" adaptor, it would randomly turn itself off as your trying to tighten the bolts, great way to warp a clutch disc.....

    Not my best buy

This isn't my best purchase at CT. This doesn't work consistently for me, my son has great luck, uses it all the time. I have trouble getting it to perform every time when I'm doing lug nuts, usually I can't hear it. Maybe cause I'm half deaf but still makes it inconvenient for me.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Handy, especially at a reduced price.

I picked up the 1/2" model to check my mechanical torque wrenches. This looks to be the Taiwan-made adapter many companies bring in under their label, and CT's price this week was competitive, so it was an easy decision. Depending who brings it in, the units claim anywhere from 1% to 2-3% accuracy. CT claims 2% for theirs, which is good enough for me. Unfortunately mine came with a nearly dead battery, so I'll have to ask CT for a fresh CR2032. With the low battery I could still use the "peak" torque measurement, just not the lights/sounds method. I tested 3 torque wrenches and the adapter was consistent and came close to matching the quality measurements the manufacturers supply with each mechanical wrench. The molded plastic case it comes with is good enough to protect the adapter, and has a real hinge which is nice, but it's a little too big inside so the adapter will rattle around unless you put a small rag or something in with it. Buttons are a bit fiddly to use and the display is upside-down for how you'd read it on a wheel lug or under a car, but that's minor. I'll rarely use this as a wrench as I doubt the electronics are durable enough for heavy use, but there will be tight spaces where it'll come in handy. Some companies who import this adapter supply it with a special socket you can clamp in a vise to make wrench testing easier-- I wish CT did this, because to my mind that's the most useful purpose of this device.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

Q: does this measure as low as 4 inch lbs?

    3 Answers
    • A: No. The 1/2" model bottoms out at 360 inch lbs (30 ft-lbs). I tried testing a light wrench down to 240 inch lbs (20 ft-lbs) with the 1/2" model and it was surprisingly accurate though. The 3/8" model claims to bottom out at 240 inch lbs. Maybe it's the same strain gauge for both units, just the physical attachments and calibration that differs.

Q: Torque readings under 20 ft-lb I see the readout shows zero ft-lbs at rest. Has any one tested the accuracy of the device at torques under 20 ft-lbs. Even if the device doesn't beep I'm thinking I can just watch the readout and stop tightening when it reads 15 ft-lbs.

    • A: I have an inch/lb 1/4" drive standard torque wrench that is quite accurate. When checked against the 3/8" drive adaptor, the readings coincided exactly.

Q: Breaker Bar Can I use a breaker bar with this or does it only have to be a socket wrench? http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/6/Tools/Sockets/RatchetHandles/PRD~0589188P/Mastercraft+Maximum+Ratcheting+Breaker+Bar.jsp?locale=en

    • A: Yes, that's what I use. It is more comfortable than a socket wrench. Just use your hands to torque, not your foot and do not exceed 150 ft-lbs.

Q: Can I use the 3/8 to torque lugnuts on tires? What is the max torque on the 3/8?

    • A: You would be much better off using a 1/2" adapter on a breaker bar / lug wrench for doing your lug nuts. Depends on your vehicles torque spec and if you have a socket for 3/8" that fits your lug nuts. At a maximum of 99 ft lbs of torque this would allow you to do them on various cars but not all and it also depends on your socket set. In order to do it right you would need a 1 foot cheater pipe to give more leverage probably. If in doubt use the lug wrench provided by the manufacturer of the vehicle as they are designed to give the right amount of torque when sufficient force is applied.

Q: What is the min and max ratings for 1/2 inch tool? The 3/8" tool rating is 20ft.lbs to 99ft.lbs.The high end is good but it would be nice if it measured lower than 20ft.lbs for small equipment work. What is the min and max ratings for 1/2 inch drive model?

Q: Accuracy of this tool How accurate is this tool? Conventional torque wrenchs come with a spec sheet inside that tells how precise the actual torque is vs the setting and is done @ 3 intervals: low-end/mid/high-end/ I would like to know the same thing about this device.

    • A: My 1/2" unit came with a spec sheet. I've compared the readings at various stages to my 3/8" adaptor, & they're nearly spot-on

Q: I have used this Torque Adapter for years and it makes torqueing simple. However, the last time used it stopped working. I installed a new battery and it is still not working. Is there some kind of reset?
