    Ever experience that sinking feeling

My existing Nautilus battery purchase in Aug 2022 fought a good fight trying to keep our boat afloat. Unfortunately incoming water triggered the auto bilge pump to cycle on and off with such frequency it completely drained our battery and failed to hold a charge.

Q: How do I safely to store a Nautilus AGM battery (regular or Ultra XD) in my unheated cottage where some days the temp. can be -30 deg Celcius? We are absent from our cottage from Oct. 1 until July 1 so 9 months of unattended storage? Please be specific.

    • A: You do not need to charge an AGM battery over the winter months. It will hold its charge. I speak from personal experience. It will be fine.

Q: I tested this new battery with my new MOTOPOWER MP0515A battery tester after fully charging it. Result: Bad battery! I can not believe it, the battery is brand new! I have tried different settings, but the results are always the same.

Q: Do you have the full spec, I need to set all parameters for élever controller through monitor,  Need more then what I could find in the questions below. Thank you

    • A: I think full spec is so that we can setup parameters for solar charge controller so it is required the battery charging setting like over voltage disconnect / charging limit voltage / Equalize charging voltage / boost charging voltage and / float charging voltage

Q: An older Nautilus battery I have advertises 160 reserve minutes and 76 amp hours, while this battery advertises 135 reserve minutes and 79 amp hours. How can this battery have a higher amp hour, yet lower reserve minute rating than my old one?

    • A: Hello. Your 010-2496-4 is a Nautilus Ultra XD battery; this battery is a Nautilus Ultra. While both are AGM technology, your Ultra XD uses thin-plate, pure lead technology. Different technology, different manufacturing process, different specs. Yes, you most certainly can have more RC but less Ah - it totally depends on how the battery is built, what the battery was optimized for, etc.

Q: How does the capacity (Ah) vary with charge cycles? How many cycles until it reaches 80%, 60%, 40%, and 20%?

    3 Answers
    • A: Using 50% DOD as an example, a typical flooded deep cycle battery might deliver 150-250 cycles. Under the same circumstances, this Nautilus Ultra battery could deliver 350-400 cycles. You may experience longer or shorter life based upon application, charging regimen, temperature, rest periods, type of equipment, age of battery, etc.

Q: Can someone please tell me what the recommended operating temperature is for this battery?

    2 Answers
    • A: AGM batteries For charging recommend staying within -18 to 49°C to avoid charging frozen batteries at low temperature or going into thermal runaway at high temperature. For discharging, recommend -29 to 49°C. Batteries discharged at temperatures below 0 C should be recharged immediately to avoid freezing. Use a charger which has a temperature sensor attached to the battery so it can adjust voltage based on the battery temperature.

Q: Can I use my Eliminator Intelligent Battery Charger 011-1506-6 to maintain/trickle charge this battery over the winter? Is it safe to store this battery indoors while it is trickle charging over the winter? (I’ll only be using it during the summer months)

    • A: Have handy a multimeter (such as 052-0060-02). You don't want the voltage of the battery going below 12.2 volts (that's considered half depleted). This battery wants to stay around 12.5 volts and that's probably the target when maintaining/storing. 12.8 volts would be 100% charged and ready to be used. I have 4 of these batteries connected in what's called "Perfectly Balanced Charging" meaning they sustain themselves at 12.5 volts for months. It takes 4 to achieve this (no maintaining necessary). You can certainly use your charger to maintain/trickle and certainly it's safe to do so indoors. Having the multimeter allows you to quickly check what the battery's sitting at (check every few weeks) just to ensure that your charger is engaging its safety features properly which I'm sure that it will. It has a built in processor and many safety features to do all the required adjustments. Under a load you would never want the battery to go below 10.5 volts which would kill the lifespan. Ideally, you'd begin charging once it reaches 12.3 volts so it never dips below half. Hope this information helps. Cheers.
