Great product, but can get expensive

This stuff works great when the directions are followed. The item has to be SUBMERGED in the solution for a couple hours (or overnight for really rusty stuff), you can't spray or wipe it on. My only complaint is that it gets used up quickly. A heavily rusted 35 year old 3lb motorcycle chain needed nearly a whole bottle to derust, but it looked great when it was done. If you degrease the item and remove loose rust before using this stuff it'll last a bit longer.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Q: Is this based on phosphoric acid? Attacks paint, rubber, plastic? How does this product work? Is it based on phosphoric acid? Will it attack paint rubber and plastic which are close to the worked area?

  • A: Evapo-Rust will not harm metals, rubber, plastic, wood, glass, PVC, Viton, most paints, most chrome, or non-rusted steel. Evapo-Rust is also biodegradable. Just soak, rinse, and reuse. Evapo-Rust works through selective chelation. This is a process in which a large synthetic molecule forms a bond with metals and holds them in solution. Most chelating agents bind many different metals. The active ingredient in Evapo-Rust bonds to iron exclusively. It can remove iron from iron oxide but is too weak to remove iron from steel where the iron is held much more strongly. Once the chelating agent has removed the iron, a sulfur bearing organic molecule pulls the iron away from the chelator and forms a ferric sulfate complex which remains water soluble. This frees the chelating agent to remove more iron from rust.

  • A: YES it can be used to remove rust spots. Q) How can I use it on a surface too large to soak?A) A smooth paper towel can be soaked with Evapo-Rust and applied to the rusted area. After this is done, cover with plastic to prevent evaporation. When item is de-rusted rinse with water.
