Makes great coffee but doesn't last

I've owned three of these now, and the last one had to be retired for the same reason as the previous two - the steam wand is attached with a plastic coupling piece and it breaks. Cuisinart can't provide a replacement part, and they still haven't figured out to make it out of metal instead for a few cents more. Very frustrating to not be able to repair it. It's otherwise reliable if you clean it as instructed. The first one I received as a gift and about 6 months in it just started smoking. I drove it in to their repair centre and it was replaced for free. No problems with that replacement or the two I've owned since other than the steam wand snapping off. It makes great coffee. I've received many compliments over the years, often from regular Starbucks customers who say it was better. I've had at least one person buy the exact same model on my recommendation. If you are having trouble you are probably over-tamping the ground coffee or grinding too fine (the finest setting on my new Braun grinder is too fine for the machine). Plastic tamper is definitely not the best but serviceable, and stainless steel alternatives start at about $20. But I'm tired of throwing the machine out every 3 years, it's wasteful and I've come to realize that it's probably better to spend more on something that will last.

Makes great Espresso!

We've had this espresso maker for about 2 years with no issues as reported in other reviews. That being said, we only use it on weekends and daily if on vacation. No leaks, steam probe is still intact. It is noisy however I expect that from an espresso maker. We grind beans in a Cuisinart Burr Grinder. I usually make Americano's and the expresso creme is wonderful. I haven't had any problems so I would recommend.

Great Entry Level Expresso Machine

I was looking to purchase my first expresso machine when I saw this on sale, so I decided to try it. For a novice expresso person I'm very pleased with the ease of using Cuisinart Expresso Maker. I was able to quickly learn how to make expresso with a nice cream. I would recommend it for anyone wanting to enter into the world of home expresso.

Leaks

We bought this Cuisinart espresso maker in November 2017. It was working fine until now. The water is leaking from around the steam wand, the bottom of the unit and the knob. You can't touch the knob nor the machine because it's too hot. Really disappointed in this machine. Stay away from it and pick another brand.

Très bon café... quand elle fonctionne. Après 1 an elle nous à lâché, nous l'avons fait réparer par la compagnie et ensuite 1 an plus tard elle nous relâche encore... Je ne recommande pas ce produit.

Questions

Q: What coffee can I use Can I use any ground coffee, ie: Maxwell House, Foldgers etc to make expresso or cappuccino or do I have to purchase pods

  • A: You should only be using espresso coffee ( a much finer grind than Tim's etc.#. Regular ground coffee will give you a very weak shot. I use Starbucks espresso beans and have them grind it. Most of the time I use the vacpac bricks of espresso coffee #usually the Lavazza Rosa brand)

Q: What kind of pods can be used? It specifically says in the product description and in the user's manual that you CAN use pods with this machine. Does this mean espresso "pucks"? I don't know what a Tassimo or whatever pod looks like so I am not sure if this kind will work. Thanks!

  • A: The only place I've seen the pods locally is Starbucks and not all the locations seem to have them. The coffee company that supplies coffee to my work place left me a few to try out - they were brands I've never heard of and just awful.

Q: Does this machine have a separate control for frothing the milk? I would like to froth the milk while my espresso is making.

  • A: No. I warm my cup with hot water then get the milk ready and coffee ready. Then make coffee, set it on top of warming tray and push the steam button. It only takes seconds for the stream to be ready. The coffee does not have time to cool before the milk is frothed.

Q: Is my steamer working? Bought the machine yesterday. Makes fantastic espresso! Just wondering about the steamer. There is actually a stream of hot water coming out of the wand, diluting my milk. Isn't this supposed to be "steam" only?

2 Answers
  • A: Yes it should produce steam. It sounds like the small STEAM/HOT WATER KNOB may be in the Hot Water position. You would have to turn it to the Steam position. The large FUNCTION KNOB also needs to be turned to the Steam/Hot Water position. The knobs are shown # 6 & 8, page 5 of the instruction booklet.

Bonne chance!

Q: does it make tea or hot chocolate? i was wondering a little more about this maker..i see the tassimo makes tea, hot chocolate, coffee, esprsso, and cappuchino....... does this do the same????

2 Answers
  • A: i think you could make hot chocolate by eatiing some chocolate milk with the same thing you use to make it ''foam'' , but i know that you can make short espresso, regular espresso and ''allongé'' espresso using the same amout of coffee with more or less water...
