Product Details

Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac is an alcohol-based solution of lac, a natural resin imported mainly from India and available in clear and amber tones. Clear shellac dries transparent with a faint, golden cast that is much lighter than oil-based varnishes, while amber shellac has a warm, orange cast that gives a rich, antique look to woodwork. Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac has many advantages over other clear finishes: it’s easy to use, dries quickly, is non-toxic when dry and cleans up easily with ammonia and water. This finish beautifies wood with a lustrous glow that won’t darken or yellow with age.

Q: How long does this product take to cure? Is it food safe?

A: Hi Ilana, Our Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac's film develops full adhesion and hardness after 1-3 days. Lower temperatures, higher humidity, and the addition of tint will prolong dry and cure time. We have not tested our Zinsser BIN for food safety.

Q: Should this be used as is or thinned? A group of us are creating a project with boxes made of MDF & we were told to seal them. Should we use the shellac as is out of the can, or a 50/50 mix with denatured alcohol (or something else) for a first coat?

A: I use this product as a sealer for work on my lathe and i mix it at a 1-3 mix one part bullseye and 3 parts denatured alchol and it works great as a sealer and you can put any finish on top of it or add multi layers and it makes a good finish alone

Q: Is this food safe? Could I use it to coat widen utensils or cutting boards (hand wash only) safely? From my understanding that's correct for shellac.

Q: The item photo and the "features" say the can is 473ml. However, in the "Specifications", it says the can size is 236 ml. Which one is correct?

Q: Can this seal knots in wood? I don't want to paint the entire wood, just stencil some white lettering over it and don't want the knots coming through them. I know there's Zinsser BIN Primer-Sealer but that's not what I'm looking for. Thanks.
