Awesome Troubles

No online user manual for tomtom via 1425m available. Touchscreen was repeatedly unresponsive (insensitive).

GPS failed after 6 months

I liked the unit when I bought it as it is easy to use and fairly accurate. The life time map feature worked well and overall, I was happy with it. The suction cup holder is a pain but only in colder weather and the programming system was not sensitive enough to allow programming on the go. It was also a little confusing initially. and wouldn't hold all the US/Canada map. The main problem arose at 6 months when it started to lose the GPS link and wouldn't re-establish it without doing a factory reset each time. It then quit altogether. The help desk at Tomtom couldn't offer a repair or diagnostic service as there are none. so I was offered a 25% discount on their sales site for a new one. That option would have made it more expensive then the sale price locally. Not much use to me and given its early failure, a replacement is not an option I am prepared to consider. There are other units available with a much higher rating so I will pay a little more and jump brands. Too bad, because when it worked, it worked well but it should last a lot longer than 6 months.
