Water based formula sucks

First time I have used Thompson water seal since it went water based. Will never use again. Bring back the old formula. I use to apply it all the time, loved it. New water based formula sucks. Will not buy again.

Thank you for your review. The milky white product you used was the new VOC compliant formula. Any VOC compliant products will generally have a lower volume of solvents than the "original" formulation. It is supposed to be milky in the can and dries clear. Unfortunately we are no longer able to make the old oil based formula. If you would like to discuss your review further or have any questions, please contact us directly at 1-800-367-6297 or info@cbgbrandreview.com. Sincerely, L.T., Customer Support Specialist

Used it for years. Follow directions and works good. You get what you pay for.

Questions

Q: Can I use Thompson clear water seal on pressure treated wood that was installed last October or will it change the colour

5 Answers
  • A: I took a course on treated lumber when it first hit the market back in the early 80s. At that time it was recommended to at the very least apply a water repellent as soon as the wood was fully dry. The course text basically stated that although you do not have to stain treated lumber as soon as it dried the very least you must do to protect the lumber from wet-dry cycles is apply a quality water repellent as soon as the wood was dry enough to allow it to penetrate. However, bear in mind if you put water repellent on first you may have problems using stain later. Today there are even some water based stains and sealers that can be put on the new wood almost immediately.

Q: After putting the WaterSealer on stain How to repair the problem eg Tacky Can I paint over it or does it need to be sanded

  • A: I had a deck that had been coated with Thompsons and I wanted to stain it with solid stain.  I aggressively went at it with a belt sander starting with 40 grit and ending with 80 The deck was very dry , full sun no rain for 3 weeks and I recoated it with solid stain. 6 months later the stain pealed off in large chucks.   My thoughts are that once it has had Thompsons  it is basically impossible to coat with a stain or paint.

Q: Can this product be used on wooden patio furniture

3 Answers
  • A: Hi, your question is much appreciated. As long as the wood is bare and porous and prepared as recommended on the back of our Clear Multi-Surface Waterproofer product, you can apply it. It is best to apply one thin coat. All my best, Dane @ Thompson’s WaterSeal Customer Support

Q: Does this chemical have an "expiry date"? How long can I store it for re-use purposes?

  • A: Will keep forever. You must keep the lid on tight as it will evaporate. It does not freeze as it is oil based. It does not deteriorate.

Dane @ Thompson's

Q: Can this be applied on Interior Marble Floors to prevent water & oil absorbed stains on the marble floors

2 Answers
  • A: I wouldn't use it on marble. It is designed for wood and brick. There are a number of male and granite sealers available online such as Weiman's or Permanent Marble and Granite Sealer.
