Be careful of defective kayaks

We bought two of these today. One was great, easy to manoeuvre and lightweight. One of them capsized in the middle of the body of water, and we could not get back in (it kept capsizing) so we had to swim it back. On shore, we could see there was a hole on the seam of the kayak, and there was lots of water that had gotten inside, leading to the kayak tipping.

Great for the kids

After our kids tried these at the friends cottage I went out straight away and bought two. Two years in, highly durable, super safe for the kids to learn, be confident and effectively paddle on their own. I always make the kids do a tip test - these kayaks are so tough to tip/dump. I have no worries about the kids being safe and stable with power boat wakes or the like on the lake. Don't hesitate to grab one or more of these if you want to intro your kids to paddling, just an awesome intro kayak!

Yes, I recommend this product.

Needs the back pad

Not sure why, but at other retailers this same kayak comes with a back pad. It's just a small nylon back pad secured to the boat on both sides with nylon straps. It's not much, but it does help ease back strain. I'm not sure why these Pelican Solos are sold at CT without the back pad ... but the sales staff at the Bracebridge, Ont., location said it doesn't come with one and the back pad isn't sold in the store. I've seen this same boat sold at other retailers with the back pad for about the same price. I bought a used Solo with the back pad. My son loves paddling this boat but honestly ,don't buy this if it doesn't come with the back pad. It's really no good without it. Judging by the photo on the website, it doesn't appear to come with it. Not out to run down CT here ... I shop there all the time ... just want to let other parents know before buying this boat.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Perfect Kayak for Kids

We bought this kayak for our 5 year old daughter as her first kayak and she absolutely loves it! It was easy for her to use and she fell in love with her independence on the water. Most importantly, I feel confident in her safety when she is out paddling with me. We like this kayak so much that we are buying a second for her to use in NB when she is visiting her Grammy. Highly recommend.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Very light, well balanced sit on top kayak

We were amazed to find that the kayak weighs in at less than 20 pounds (9 kg). Being so light makes it very easy to put the kayak in the water and take it out. Even though the kayak is very light it still has good bouyancy and stability. Our ten year old son only ever tipped the kayak when he had both legs over one side and was reaching for something. Being a shorter kayak (just under 6 feet (1.8 metres) it is very responsive and easy to turn and maneuver. The shorter length does make the kayak a little bit slower than a larger kayak. but this is really only noticeable when kayaking with someone in a larger kayak. Finally, the kayak is easy to flip back over while you are in the water and very easy to climb back on to. You will not want to be much over the 140 pounds (63.5 kg) recommended top weight. You can use the kayak even if you are heavier than the recommended top weight but it becomes less stable.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Q: Does the kids kayak come with a paddle?

5 Answers
  • A: It does not come with a paddle. I bought the cheapest paddles at Canadian Tire (19.99). They are actually supposed to be two paddles (not kayaking paddles) But I put them together without the end pieces and made it into kayak paddles. They came in peices and was easy to make kayak paddles. Work great.

  • A: It's a sit on top so the water drains through those holes if it gets in the boat. One less thing for kids to worry about.
