great waterborne product with easy cleanup

I’ve been a woodfinishing professional for over forty years and I’ve been using this product since it first came out and recommend it for all wood finishing projects. The best way to apply it is by the spray method to allow a more evenly flow.. it will never turn “yellow or amber” because its a waterborne product and doesn’t have the same resins that the He “oil Based” products have that cause that “yellowing/amber” tone over time. Because its a coalescing film it does not dry the same way as a reactive or evaporative coating and will not “flow’ out as smooth as those coatings why it’s applied by the brush or roller technique therefore, I recommend spraying or adding an extender or floetrol to allow for a smoother finish for brush and roller.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Q: What is the best way to prevent small bubbles and fish eyes? I have been extremely careful in sanding, removing any dust, and applying it very carefully with a foam brush using long smooth slow brush strokes. Yet I still get them.

  • A: Id suggest not using a foam brush. Use a good quality paint brush. also make sure you only stir the can, not shake it

Q: Can Helm. Spar Ure. I/Ext. be used as clear "maintenance coat" for fiber glass front door (not natural wood)? Apply with natural bristle or foam brush? Stain is perfect + dark mahogany; will it amber + I don't need to sand? Gets no direct sun.

  • A: In general, varnish can be used over fibreglass, but make sure the surface is cleaned thoroughly with mineral spirits. . You should consult the manufacturer of your door to be sure. Use the applicator recommended by the varnish manufacturer, i.e. a good quality natural bristle brush. Multiple thin coats are better than fewer thick coats

Q: Can a foam brush be used? How can a bristle brush be cleaned to reuse?

  • A: I used a foam brush and tried to re-coat every six hours. I soaked it in paint thinners between coats and made sure it was as dry as possible before starting the next coat. I imagine a bristle brush would clean with paint thinner.

Q: Can I wet sand the finish with super fine grit up to 6,000 and buff it to remove any imperfections and get a perfect finish?

2 Answers
  • A: If the customer wants to wet sand the last coat of Helmsman they can, typically the method below is what we recommend. For a Satiny Smooth appearance: I would suggest allowing your last coat of finish to dry for several days, as this will ensure that the coating has had time to harden before being abraded. Rub out your final coat of dried finish with 600-grit or finer wet-dry sand paper dipped in mineral or lemon oil taking care to monitor your progress as you go. When you are pleased with the finish, wipe off the lemon oil residue with a clean, lint-free cloth. For a High-Gloss appearance: Again, I would suggest allowing the final coat of finish to cure for several days. Lightly sand the final coat with very fine sandpaper (1000-grit or finer) dipped in mineral oil or lemon oil. Monitoring your progress would be recommended as you go. When you are pleased with the finish, wipe off the oil residue with a clean, lint-free cloth. You may buff the gloss even higher using an automotive rubbing compound on a soft cloth. For both techniques, I highly recommend a test area to ensure satisfactory results. Thank you,

Q: Can I thin this with mineral spirits so that it will be easier to apply with less brush strokes? Also could I use a roller to apply it?

2 Answers
  • A: Yes you can!  If you’re on raw wood try a 60:40 mix spar: mineral spirits; then scuff sand (320grit) and put a second coat at 80:20 to ensure you have full coverage!

Q: I applied a thin coat of shellac on wood for sealing. Can I apply this product over it. Thanks

  • A: I would give the shellac a light sanding before applying this product or it will just peal off.
