Mastercraft SAE Double Ratcheting Combo, 12-pc

Just purchased a SAE set of 12 PC's at 70% off and I couldn't be happier. The quality of the metal and the ratcheting mechanism is quite good and they all feel sturdy and tough. When I bought the set I was pleasantly surprised to find that actually both ends of each wrench have ratcheting action. Only one end is closed and the other end is box. This means no matter which end of the wrench you use you don't have to disengage the wrench from the bolt or nut before giving it another turn. This saves a lot of time and hard work specially in tight spots.

If you don't mind coming in to have wrenches replaced every few weeks at the store's expense then by all means grab these wrenches up. The closed end ratchet on one of my wrenches completely seized under light use. Not sure if dirt and grit are the culprit or if the mechanism itself just packed it in after about 100 or so ratchets while working on dirty shock absorbers. If you want reliable ratcheting wrenches maybe looked elsewhere but for me this is one of the only spring loaded open end ratchet wrench sets out there for a decent price. So the hassle of having to go in to get them replaced every so often is outweighed by the convenience of open end ratchets.

I read the review on this item. Anyways one day I went to Canadian Tire. I though window shop (even thou in the back of my head I wanted to buy something). I saw a 7 piece set for sale. But then I saw the "Mastercraft Maximum 12-pc Double Ratcheting Combo" was on sale. I knew I couldn't lose with the Candian Tire Warranty. (THOSE OF YOU WHO AREN'T AWARE ABOUT CANADIANS TIRE WARRANTY SHOULD REALLY READ UP OR ASK). When I bought the item. I didn't know that the open head also serves a ratcheting. No need to pull out the wrench from the bold and then re-angling. I recommend this one.

This set (and the seven-piece set) is more than just a Gear Wrench set. The "Double Ratcheting" feature means that not only will the box end ratchet, but the open end has a ratcheting action, too. Especially on sale, the price per wrench is quite reasonable for what you get. The wrenches work well and are nicely finished, although I perceive a slight curve in 2 of the ones in my set. I can't rate durability at this time because this is obviously a new purchase. But I have given 5 stars because of the lifetime warranty. (But note that Mastercraft warns to NOT use these wrenches to try to free up frozen fasteners; use a regular wrench for that!) The downfall with this product (and others in similar packaging) is the case. (Minus one star for features.) Even if it worked well (which it doesn't) it is too large and has no carrying handle. But once the retaining strips are torn off, the wrenches are barely held in place. They fall out of their slots very easily. Taking one out usually dislodges its neighbours. If you think that you will get a nice wrench holder with this purchase, you are mistaken. It is too bad that all of that plastic has to end up in the garbage. (I couldn't even find a recycling symbol on it). I ended up buying a roll-up wrench holder from the Brazil river store.
