Belt skips

I bought this drill press 2 years ago. No matter what I drill the belt always loses tension and the chuck stops turning. I've adjusted the belt for what I'm drilling, I've replaced the belt and still nothing helps. I called CT but they said I waited too long and there's nothing they can do. Will never buy a Mastercraft drill press again.

Multiple Defects. Not Recommended.

Bought it on sale. For the features, it was a good deal. Like any power tool, I started making adjustments to get it running correctly. First I find that the motor axis was not parallel to the spindle. I rotated it but the bracket was not true so I needed to shim it with washers. The wires in the housing for the light switch and the battery terminal were touching so the light wouldn't turn off. A little electrical tape fixed this. When I got the speed set and the belt tensioned correctly I fired it up and it was vibrating a lot and was noisy. I checked the pulleys for runout and the motor pulley was way off, vibrating the system. Also, the spindle was not perpendicular to the table fore/aft which was not adjustable. I returned the unit and received a refund no questions asked. I can't fault CT on their customer service but I think my review speaks for itself on the product.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Mastercraft 4.1 amp drill press

I had to replace my old Mastercraft drill press after 37 years. I know that things change but all changes are to the good. This new drill press is not the quality of my old one. The work light is a flimsy and touchy item -- sometimes it works and sometime the batteries fall out of their case. It's not to say it's a bad item because it does the job it was intended to do

No, I do not recommend this product.

Q: What is the quiz diameter?  I need to use a mortising attachment which requires a quill of 55mm or 60mm.

  • A: Do you mean 2" depth? Which is quill travel, the chuck max diameter opening is 5/8" I am having a hard time finding the actual dimension and specs of this drill, which is needed to assess the value as a "deal".

Q: Can this drill through steel?

3 Answers
  • A: In general the answer is yes, but it has to be qualified based on your task. Minimum speed is 620 RPM, which is high for boring large holes. It would be fine for diameters less than 3/8 or so. Of course, you would need to use a bit designed for drilling steel.

Q: Why is the maximum diameter 5/8"? Simply because of the hole in the plate or is there another reason. I would like to use a hole saw for a project.

  • A: 5/8 is the maximum shank size. I have a 4" hole saw with a 3/8 shank, so you should be good. To prevent damage to your hole saw, mount a wooden work surface on the table.

Q: Need a new v-belt for CT drill press K710 can't seem to find one anywhere any ideas?

  • A: Just take your old belt to Lordco auto parts or any auto parts dealer and they should be able to measure it with a belt gauge. Mine uses a standard v belt, very common.

Q: how can i change the speed on this drill

2 Answers
  • A: Inside the housing on top there are 2 sets of pulleys connected by a belt much like in a car. One set of pulleys is attached to the assembly holding your drill bit and the other is attached to the motor. By adjusting the belt on both pulleys, you can adjust the speed of the drill from 620 to 3070 rpm. It's similar to the one in the picture.

Q: What is a motor no load rpm?

2 Answers
  • A: The "No Load RPM" is how fast it turns when it is not drilling into something. A "Load" on the motor will cause it to slow down.
