  • In some instances, your Garmin product might not have sufficient memory remaining for you to load an update to the map data, in which case you will need to either (a) select reduced map data coverage for your updates, or (b) purchase separately a microSD™/SD™ card (if and as applicable to your Garmin product) and load all or a portion of the map data coverage for your updates to the card and insert the card into the microSD/SD card slot contained in your Garmin product. A decent GPS for the price

I bought this unit about 6 months ago after my old Magellan failed. Overall it's a decent GPS with a few minor annoyances unique to Garmin I suppose. Pros: Lifetime map updates which my old Magellan did not have. On screen speed and speed limit readout. Recalculates route whenever you deviate without annoying message. Announces street names, although some pronunciations are off. Cons: Warning chimes are a bit too quiet. Sharp turn warnings are inconsistent with actual road. Inputting addresses is backwards. Starts with street number instead of city, but that's Garmin. The menus and menu navigation is much more complicated and confusing than my Magellan was. Stores destinations in 2 different menus. Given that new cars now built-in GPS I'm surprised that these portable ones are still so expensive, but this one is decent value on sale.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

    Can't Trust Directions

I bought one two weeks ago so I would not have to use data on my phone to navigate. Device could not be there trusted and I had to switch back to my phone. It frequently did not choose the shortest or best route, and these were not new highways. Even once you had chosen a much shorter route, it was in capable of rerouting and would try to send you backwards to the much longer route. I returned mine for a refund. Don't buy it.

No, I do not recommend this product.

While the GPS is ready to use out of the box, we would suggest using the Garmin Express program to check for any map and software updates that may have been made available while the device was in transit and on the retailer’s shelf. If you haven't installed Garmin Express please download it from the following link: www.garmin.com/express Garmin

    Fairly useless

This unit was consistently 400 m off. I'd drive by a school, and it was warning me a school was coming up in 400. . . 450. . . I reached a motel and it told me the destination was 400 m away yet. Also, I was at an intersection and wanted to go home. I happened to know the way home. The unit directed me to drive back 1.5 km, turn right, turn right again, and then drive home. In addition, the list of restaurants and motels in my area was completely outdated. Some restaurants closed 8 years ago, and I had updated the unit with the latest version. Do not buy this.

No, I do not recommend this product.

    Great GPS

I bought the Garmin 50LM because it was a good value and my wife has the original Garmin Nuvi. The update was seamless and the device works perfectly. I was able to use Garmin Express (already installed) to update maps and get set up. The Garmin 50LM has met my expectations and has performed perfectly. I highly recommend.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

    1 Answer

    1 Answer
    • A: "Where am I?" is a feature available on some automotive devices. This feature displays the geographical coordinates and elevation for your current location. It also displays the nearest address and intersection as well as nearby fuel stations, hospitals, and police stations. You may also save your current location as a favorite from the "Where am I?" screen. To access the "Where am I?" feature, touch the vehicle icon on the map screen.
