Love it but can't get it fixed

I was gifted this drill driver kit and I do a lot of DIY at my house, my parents house, my children's houses and for neighbors. I have had it for about two years and it hasn't let me down until recently. Last month doing a job for a neighbor it started with not being able to change out bits, now bits won't stay in. This drill is light enough my six year old granddaughter can use it and has as much power as my Craftsman drill does. Can't register for warranty because I have no receipt and closest service provider is 136 miles. I am not paying to mail it off either so I guess I will hope someone gifts me a new one or I win a new one. Either way it's Craftsman now for me.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Great tool overall

I have had the drill for about 3 1/2 years now and have had zero issues with it. It is plenty powerful enough and has an overall great compact shape. I have used it to drill 1/2" holes through railroad ties to build retaining walls with minimal issues. This drill will tackle jobs meant for much heavier equipment. I usually do not beat up tools too bad, but the tool has held up good for the amount of work it has accomplished. Overall, it is a great additional to the toolbox and it gets used almost daily. I would highly recommend this tool to anyone seeking a new drill.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’ve had this drill for 7 or 8 years. It’s been in the shop, on the job site and all around abused. I still use it today. Never replaced a single part on it.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Read instructions

Every time I hear about problem with the chuck/clutch I laugh. Years ago I actually read the instructions for use before using, most don't. Most people will insert a drill, grab the chuck collar and engage the motor to tighten the drill. Wrong!!! This is the most common way of ruining the chuck/clutch mechanism. Insert drill, hand tighten them move fir/rev switch to middle position which "locks" chuck rotation. The by hand only, tighten drill.

Speed Control Fails after One Year

This drill was one of the first tools I bought when my old 18v DeWalt NiCad batteries died off, and I knew I would have to switch everything to the 20-volt XR system. That was just over a year ago. Today, doing nothing more than driving wood screws into plywood and 2x4s, the speed control made a metallic grinding noise, and refused to go into high speed ever again. A half-day job took twice as long because this drill would only run at half speed. And NO, it was not the batteries; They were fully charged. My old 18v DeWalt drill was just about bulletproof, through all kinds of conditions and use. But for this to give out SO easily, under such light duty?? This is a serious disappointment. I know the pandemic was tough on production with "global materials" (please), but it makes me wonder if it also the DeWalt brand decide that it was okay to turn out junk tools.

Questions

1 - 10 of 13 Questions

Q: Does 054-1340 come with a battery or two batteries and the charger? The description "Replacement batteries: DeWALT 20V Batteries, 2-pk (054-3201)" looks like you have to purchase batteries separately. Very poor description. Please clarify if the battery (ies) and charger are included.

Q: First time buyer here. Can this also be used on screws or is this purely a drill machine for drilling holes?

1 Answer
  • A: Yes it can. For the most part any variable speed drill can be used as a screwdriver. Please keep in mind that when using a drill as a screwdriver, be aware that it may not work so well on brittle materials (eg. some forms of plastic) as even at a slow speed it could still break or crack the material. For those types of materials it is best to use a hand screwdriver.

Q: What is the main differences between this, and the #54-1280-8 model? I don't much at all about these things, and I will be buying one as a gift. What are the major differences? Thanks!

1 Answer
  • A: Both are great professional drill offers. The newer technology in motors, as a premium offering is brushless. Brushless is relatively new to the cordless power tool market and offers the following three benefits, 1) More efficient motor = less draw on the battery = longer running times between charges, 2) brushes are a service part that need replacing over time, not brushes = longer motor life, and 3) brushless motors have the capacity to produce greater performance. That said, both drills target professional users and offer professional benefits with respect to their overall performance, ergonomics and run-time. Both will be sure to impress the most critical of handy-persons as a gift!
