Not Even Close To 40Watts!

Worst panels ever. Been buying over the last three years when on sale. I finally hooked 8 of them up to my travel trailer(320 watts) and only get 110 watts in direct sun light. I thought it was my Victron charge controller limiting output, but I hooked up a watt meter and same result. Way over priced even when on sale. Garbage!!!

No, I do not recommend this product.

Solar Panel Good Value

This 40w panel is a good value. I used it on my sailboat to charge 2 12v AGM batteries which ran my electric cooler. It generated enough power to keep my batteries with enough of a charge to run my cooler at 2C for a week during 25+ C daytime temps.

Questions

1 - 10 of 215 Questions

Q: Could you please double-check the claimed amperage output? 40 watts at 12 volts should be 3.33 Amps, but it claims only 2.3 Amps maximum. Thank you. 12Volts x 3.333Amps = 40 Watts Product #: 11-2043-0

  • A: I own one these panels. The operating voltage is 17 volts (measured in full sun), so 2.35 amps is correct. In the real world with a better quality PWM type controller, which typically operates at 75% efficiency, 1.8 amps is peak output (observed), so I would say the panel works as advertised. A more expensive MPPT controller might deliver 2.2+ amps, but the cost of the controller goes from about $30 to $100 or more. Not worth it with a small 40 watt panel - you'd be farther ahead buying another panel, or a bigger one.

Q: does this solar panel need a battery to go with it or can I simply use to charge little things like a cell phone while camping?

  • A: This solar panel only charges 12v batteries. You would need an inverter hooked up to the battery to charge cell phones or other devices.

  • A: I am fairly certain this means you are not securely connected. Check the battery contacts and that the cords are snugly plugged together. I had that same issue at first and was able to solve that way.

Q: I just bought this solar panel on sale.  Happy about that... but I see that the controller is "indoor use only".  What?  Where do you put the controller when your panel obviously has to be outside?

  • A: I was shocked to read this info also on the back of the controller right under the ‘Made In China’.   Would have been nice if it was written on the outside of the box the panel came in. I will do what someone answered to you an hopefully find a spot in the battery box. Not sure if there is enough room though. : /

  • A: While it is not ideal for mounting. And unlike other answers, it doesn't have screw holes. You could get special brackets for them. But unless it's for a shed roof it would be next to useless.
