Although I haven't used the regular 3M clear film, I've always had the impression it provides good protection. I trust that a 3M product will be worth a try as they generally have a good reputation for innovation and quality. Pros: Good instructions, videos. Went on fairly easily, not all that critical to apply. Self-leveled very nicely and set clear as promised. Very easy to apply over difficult areas like mirrors, lower bumpers, grills etc. Inexpensive. Cons: Need to re-apply each year (so they say). Needs rain/dust/bug protection until clear; overnight at least. Tricky to avoid a slip when removing masking. Curing is slow, up to 7 days. Sunlight (presumably UV?) will speed this up. I would definitely use this again. The first time is good practice, but the second time you'll be good (do a friends car first :) I'll have to wait and see if it provides adequate protection. I heard after the fact that you can put up to 3 layers of this on, but I haven't tried it. I would consider putting 3M film just on the hood, and using this spray to provide some protection for mirrors, lower bumpers, rocker panels, maybe even wheels(?).

    Yes, I recommend this product.

Q: How much to use??? How many cans of 3M Paint Defender do I need to cover the front of the hood of my Equinox, the bumper and the front end of the fenders? Does it benefit to apply it to headlights, does it keep them from going yellow?

    • A: I tried to get 4 cans to cover the front of a Murano, but they only had 2 in stock. I covered the mirrors, all the lower from end and about a foot up the hood. I probably had enough left to go at least 18" or more up the hood, but once I masked, I was committed. They're recommended coverage is maybe a little conservative, so you'd probably be safe going by that.

Q: Can I use this product on the fibreglass of my RV?

    • A: I believe it's good on any painted surface, regardless of what's underneath. I think it would have a lot of flex - probably even more than paint with a flex agent. Not sure about plastic (unpainted) surfaces - I masked mine.

Q: Why is it being discontinued? Can it be used over factory stripes and emblems that came with the car?

    1 Answer
    • A: This product should only be applied over smooth painted surfaces. If the stripe has been cleared over, then yes…it can be used over it. If it is a vinyl sticker then Paint Defender should not be used over it. This product should not be used over emblems also as removal of the material in the texture and convolutions of the emblem would be very difficult.

Q: Is this product suitable for alloy wheels?

    1 Answer
    • A: Provided the directions are followed, the most important part being to wax before spraying, Paint Defender will provide protection and will not harm alloy wheels. Removal may be difficult on more intricate wheel patterns, however.

Q: Can I use this on my 2013 f150 front plastic grill.

    1 Answer
    • A: Hi thanks for your question. Our product should work as long as the instructions are followed, and it should not be used on raw plastic. It would be best to test our product on a small area for suitability. We hope this information helps. Thanks.

Q: is the 3M paint defender good for covering up paint chipps so as to prevent them from rusting or getting bigger?

    1 Answer
    • A: If there is a paint chip in your car, oxidization from the chip will have already occurred. Paint Defender will prevent it from getting bigger but can only slow down rust. It will not prevent it from rusting.

Q: longevity The life of the product is stated as 1 yr. What happens after the product has been applied for 1 yr.

    1 Answer
    • A: Please see the vendor's reply: After one year the product may start to give off a faded colour. It is recommended that after one year, the consumer peel off the film and put on another coat. If the consumer is happy with the product after a year and it doesn’t look like its fading, the consumer can keep the product on. It will not harm the car in any means.
