If there's somewhere nasty to get into, big river smallmouth will get into it. I separate the bristles on the weed guard to form a V, it definitely helps reduce hangs. Work it slow in heavy cover, if you feel any resistance you can normally give it a bit of slack and then reel it slow over/past.
