Bad design

Difficult to fill as u have no idea how full it is without taking the top off. When it runs out of water and u fill it u have to wait up to 6 minutes for it to reset before u know that it is working.

We’re sorry to hear how inconvenient this has been, especially not being able to see the water level and having to wait after refilling to confirm it’s working. We understand how that delay and lack of visibility can make everyday use frustrating. Your feedback is valuable and helps us identify areas where the design experience can improve. An Excellent Humidifer

The Honeywell HWM44BC is an excellent residential humidifier but the Product Details on the Canadian Tire Corporation (CTC) Website are not as complete or accurate as they should be. In this review I will discuss the results of several weeks of testing and present additional information from the User Guide that may assist in making an informed purchase decision. Click ‘View Product Details’ to view and confirm under ‘Features’ that this product is defined as having ‘2 comfort settings to adjust moisture level.’ It would be more accurate to define the unit as having 2 rates of humidification. There is only a single, 3-position switch, which permits the unit to be either Off, or to operate at either Low or High rates of humidification which I will call High speed or Low speed in what follows. Click ‘Specifications’ then roll down and click ‘View more Specifications’. The Wattage Rating (w) is listed at 400 W but this applies only when operating at High speed. Low speed reduces power consumption to 200 W. The Voltage (V) is listed at 110 V on the website and 120 V in the Owner’s Manual. The average voltage supplied by Ontario Hydro over the period of the following tests was about 122 V. The tank capacity is 1.5 gallons or 5.7 litres. Operating continuously on High speed, the tank emptied in 10 Hours and 23 minutes, yielding an average Humidity Output rate of .549 l/h (liters per hour.) Operating continuously on Low speed, the tank emptied in 21 hours and 35 minutes, yielding an average Humidity Output rate of .264 l/h. Roll back up to the top of the Specifications section. Humidity Output is listed as .20 l/h. This is only 76% of actual output at Low speed and 36.5% of actual output at High speed. Number of Moisture Settings is listed as 1. As this unit does not have a humidistat, that value should be 0 if it relates to humidity or 2 if it relates to humidification rates. Number of Speeds is listed as 1. If this relates to fan speeds (fans being on the row above), it should be 0 as there are no fans. If it relates to humidification rates it should be 2. Maximum Run Time (h) is listed as 24 hours under ‘Features’ and 26 hours under ‘Specifications’. The 24-hour specification exceeds actual test run time by 2 hours and 25 minutes at Low speed and by 13 hours and 37 minutes at High speed. Humidification Method is listed as Warm Mist which matches the description of the unit in the Owner’s Manual and indicates humidity is created by using electricity to convert water to steam. Warnings related to this method appear only in the Owner’s Manual but may be relevant to making a purchase decision. The following appears in bolded uppercase under ‘SETTING UP YOUR HUMIDIFIER’. WARNING: KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. THIS PRODUCT PRODUCES HOT STEAM AND SHOULD BE PLACED IN AN AREA NOT ACCESSIBLE TO CHILDREN OR PETS, WITH THE POWER CORD OUT OF REACH. The temperature of the mist where it exits at the top of the unit is about 60 C operating in Low speed and 65 C operating in High speed. It cools to a comfortable warm mist very quickly however, within 2 or 3 inches of the top of the unit. In Canada, we generally need additional humidity only during the winter months when air exchange with the outdoors is kept to a minimum to preserve heat. A warm mist humidifier is often preferred over a cool mist or ultrasonic humidifier, because steam purifies the indoor air and the additional electricity required is cost-efficiently returned to the room as heat. This humidifier outperformed my expectations, making an 800 sq ft room too humid running for more than a few hours even at Low speed. I added a digital humidity control (not sold by CTC) into which to plug the humidifier, in order to permit it to cycle on and off to maintain a lower humidity. It now maintains 50% humidity, operating at Low speed less than 40% of the time. There is a version of this unit available from CTC with humidity control (HWM445) which is less expensive than adding a separate digital humidity control. Nevertheless, a separate controller may be worth the extra expense as it reduces the electronic controls on the humidifier to a simple mechanical switch, permits humidity to be controlled within a variable range (thereby making cycle time adjustable), and permits the humidistat to be located in conditioned room air, well away from the humidifier itself.

Works well and easy refill

Work as expected. Really like refilling by pouring water through the top. I am glad i bought this model instead of the one where you have to detach the tank for refill

My cool mist humidifier struggled to get the humidity over 25%. With this one it’s sitting at 40%. Also easy to clean and refill.

  • A: I just bought one and when I filled it with water and turned it on it immediately had a strong burning/melting plastic smell. It did not go away after 10 minutes and I couldn't stand the smell so I tried running it outside for a few hours and it hasn't improved.

Q: What is the tank size for this unit? What square foot would it cover? And there is no automatic shut off?

  • A: tank size - holds 1.5 gallons ( 20 cups), on low setting a fill lasts about 24 hours. square footage - I live in approximately 1400 square feet, all on one floor. It does not cover the total area, just one room at a time. I keep it in my bedroom. automatic shut off - when the unit runs out of water it does shut itself off.

Q: Why it doesn’t start when I turn it on

3 Answers
  • A: Make sure you only fill the large section for water. Do not add any water in the section where the actual (gray) heater is. It normally should start within a few seconds, like less than 5-10 seconds. Also, ensure you remove the tape on the white ''floater''. Hope this helps.

  • A: Thank you for your inquiry. This unit is very quiet. Parts of the unit can be washed in the dishwasher, while the heating chamber and the main body of the unit need to be washed by hand. Instructions for cleaning the unit will come in the owners manual. Q: why is the red and green lights both on at same time

2 Answers
  • A: The red light is on because, you have to clean the scale deposit inside, where the float and chimney are, it doesn't work properly, is it is scaled up to much, so just take it apart, the red slide switch at the bottom just slide it back on the screws and the whole then come our, first you can remove the chimney, or maybe just you ran out of water, the red light will come on, I really like this vapor machine, you probably have to clean it once or twice per season Dave

Q: This unit seems to have no way to allow you to set or regulate the humidity level. Am I just supposed to turn it off once I notice it's reached 40% or so on my hygrometer? Otherwise, doesn't it just keep putting more and more moisture into the air?

2 Answers
  • A: I just started mine at high moisture output and probably in a day or two I will run it on the lower setting for the rest of the winter. When I do notice a drop in humidity I run it again during the day on high and night switch it to low to prevent condensation on windows.
