Q: would this shovel be useful to dig out your car on the street after a snowstorm

A: Yes and no. The handle is quite short, so ergonomically it might not be the best. If you wanted to keep an emergency shovel in the car at all times, then this is a good option. I carry mine on my snowmobile in case I ever have to dig myself out.
