How to choose a hockey stick

Finding the right hockey stick is essential to improving your game.

Left or right?

Start by determining if you need a left- or right-handed stick. It’s all about what hand feels most comfortable on the top when you grip your stick. If that’s your right hand, you need a left-handed stick. If it’s your left, you need a right-handed stick.

Choose a stick length

To find the right stick length, hold the stick on the floor in front of you. If you’re in shoes, the stick should come up to somewhere between your chin and nose, so that when you put on skates, it will be just under your chin.

Determine flex

Don’t forget to consider flex, which is the amount the stick bends during play. Stick flex preferences will vary by player and include factors such as height and strength, your game position and shooting style. As a starting point to determine your flex, take your body weight in pounds and divide by two. The higher the flex number, the stiffer the stick.

Consider blade curve

Blade curve can play a role in how a player shoots and handles the puck. Choosing the right curve comes down to personal preference—if you're unsure, decide based on the position you play.

For defensemen, a heel curve (curve near the base of the blade) can help improve slapshot power and accuracy. For forwards and beginners, a toe curve (curve near the toe of the blade) can help players lift the puck easier while shooting in tight spaces. Players known for their stickhandling may choose a mid curve (curve towards the middle of the blade) which can help improve control and accuracy.

Cut the stick, if needed

If you need to cut the stick based on your height, preference for reach or stickhandling, don’t forget that the flex will also change.
