It’s so important to get outside with your kids, but spending time in the sun safely requires a little caution.
Be smart with schedules
If you’re planning outdoor events — or just deciding what time to hit the beach — try to avoid the peak hours between 11 AM and 4 PM, when the sun is the strongest.
Covering up is not always enough to protect your skin. Look for dark-coloured, tightly woven fabric — if you hold it up to the light and can see through it, UV rays can also get through.
Be savvy about sunscreen
Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF rating and apply a liberal amount to all exposed areas of skin, including ears and the top of your feet. Most importantly, remember to reapply sunscreen throughout the day according to the instructions on your product.
Hats are a must-have for anyone in the sun. Look for styles with wide brims and be sure to add sunscreen to any exposed areas on your ears and neck.
Keep everyone hydrated
Always have water bottles on hand for everyone and encourage kids to drink up, so they stay well hydrated.
Bring your own shade
Everyone needs a break from the sun now and then, so pack a portable shelter for relief. Perfect for mealtimes or a short rest, so you can still enjoy the fresh air, but are protected from the sun’s rays.
