    Warped bottom

Bottom is not flat, with a slight warp upward. Making it pool oil away from the center.

No, I do not recommend this product.

    Very versatile pan!

I bought this pan on sale as my other cast iron pan had a wooden handle and I wanted to be able to put it in the oven. I love it. It has a longer handle than most others, and the pre-seasoned surface is great. I have already made corn bread in this and just now I am frying up some left over perogies and the pan gave them a beautiful crispy exterior. I can see that I will be getting a lot of use out of this cast iron pan!

    Yes, I recommend this product.

    Good when on sale

It is slightly better than the lodge cast iron pan. At regular price the price difference is too high to justify buying this but if on sale to similar price of the lodge then this one is better. If course both this one and the lodge are the new cast irons and they don't make them like they used to. It is molded instead of machined so won't get that perfectly smooth bottom that some people like. I spent a week putting 6 ultra coats of canola oil on it and it preforms well. It comes pre-seasoned but the coat is not thick enough and you can smell the iron through the seasoning so I would season it some more to avoid unwanted iron from leeching into your cooking.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

    Questions

    1 - 9 of 9 Questions

Q: Why is the surface of this iron fry pan so rough? My Mother's is very old and well seasoned and is smooth as silk. The roughness of this one makes me leery. Although it does say it is preseasoned.

    • A: A lot of the old pans were machined after casting, meaning that after coming out of the sand form they were put onto a machine that cut a nice flat surface into them. That second process is considered too time-consuming and therefore expensive these days, unfortunately. You can make a new pan smoother by putting on a nice thick layer of seasoning (oil carbonized by high heat; flax oil is one of the best). It will be fairly non-stick too. And for extra smoothness, you can also sand it first (yes, lots of work).

Q: i bought one and before to use washed by regular mean and it started to rust. Is that normal?

    • A: After washing it, you must dry it and oil it. I like to place it on the stove with the heat on for a few minutes to really dry it. Then I spray it with Pam or put a bit of oil in the bottom and spread it with a paper towel.

Q: Is there a kitchenAid website that offers more information on this product? I'd like to know if it's actually made out of %100 cast iron. A previous answer offered for this product said you could sand the skillet down to make the cooking surface smoother. I just want to make sure there aren't any unhealthy additives.

    1 Answer
    • A: You may contact the manufacturer's customer care line at 1-800-661-6721 if you have any further questions. This item is made of 100% cast iron and is pre-seasoned with food grade oil. We do not recommend sanding the base to make it smoother. Also this item is not suitable to use on ceramic cooktop as the base will scratch the cooktop.

Merci
