"Lincoln Electric has always made great welding products, and this is another example of their great products. This welder works great and is durable and reliable. I have welded two implements for a 3 point hitch with this welder. The welding gloves are great and the welding helmet is okay.(would be better if it was auto darkening) Overall this is a great product, if you want a good stick welder buy this one. And if its on sale you cant go wrong. And remember, if it's not red it belongs in the shed."

"I search for the best occasional welder and I always came back to this one. It has plenty of power and will does most jobs well. There is just a steeper learning curve to stick weld but the cost for everything is lower."

225 welder enquiry

Question:

I bought a welder and realized my panel will not handle more. Can i use my stove outlet to run my welder when needed.I bought a stove cord replacement and cut the neutral plug off . The stove runs off 2-40amp inline breakers

Answer:

You should check with a certified electrician. From what I know, what you are describing is in violation of the Fire code and should you have a problem your insurance company may not cover you.

Answer:

The manual shows a 50 amp breaker.

You will need to check with a certified electrician for the wiring.

I would like to plug this machine into a regular wall outlet, is there a special plug i can buy for it?

Answer:

No. This machine needs 230V. A standard wall outlet only provides 120V. A standard outlet will not provide enough power to run this machine.

Answer:

No. A regular household outlet is 110/115 volts at 15 amperes. This will not power a 220 volt piece of equipment. However, a standard household electrical panel contains 220 volts and it would be possible to install an appropriate receptacle to power this unit. If the panel has used its breakers/fuses to physical capacity, then it would mean creating a sub-panel to do this. If you have no knowledge of electrical power distribution systems, then you need a licenced electrician to do this for you.

Can this unit be powered by a 5000 watt (continuous) generator?

Answer:

Watts = Input Amps x volts.

Let's say you are running the machine at full output. At that output you are drawing nearly 50 amps of power from the wall. 50 x 230= 11,500 watts needed to run at full power.

If you are running the machine at lower outputs you may be able to use the welder however there are no ratings given on the Lincoln website to show you the input power needed at various outputs.

You may want to look at a Lincoln generator/welder that gives you the ability to stick weld.

Volts times Amps equals Watts. In this case, 230 volts times 50 amps equals 11,500 watts. So the short answer is no, you cannot use this welder on a 5,000 watt output generator. However, the welder is not trying to draw 50 amps at its lower levels used for thinner stock. It will work at its low settings but will likely blow the generators breakers at the higher settings; the welder cannot be used to its full potential. There is also the risk of overheating the generator induction coils prior to the breakers opening, which may cause damage to the generator. I don't recommend trying this at all.

Can I run this off my NEMA 14-30 dryer receptacle?

Answer:

Yes it can be done for lighter work. All you need to do is change the plug to an old dryer plug wired properly. Red and black are 110 volts each giving you your 220 volts.
If the welder doesnt have the white wire you can forget about wiring it. Clip it and insulate to avoid contact with anything. Green or unisulated copper is your ground and you better make sure to wire them together to keep your insurance company happy. For heavier work with thick steel requiring the 225 amp setting and welding for longer periods you can expect the breaker to trip. Allow to cool down for 5 minutes before resseting and welding again.

x2 Works with a different 3 prong plug, but as said, if you do not have a 50 amp panel, you wont be able to get full power out of the welder.

actually its not dangerous to use a undersized wire and breaker , such as a dryer outlet. the reason being if the unit draws more then 30 amps on the wire, the 30 amp breaker will trip before the wire is damaged, thats what they do. It is very dangerous to run 30 amp wire 10/3 for instance on a 40 amp breaker because if the wire had a load of 35 amps on it the wire would become dangerously hot and possible fail, and the breaker would not trip. Some welders that are rated at 50 amps run fine on a 30amp dryer setup, i know friends who have done it many times, it will trip the breaker when they max them out on high. I would reccomend running a 50 amp circut and breaker thou if i were you.

No. This welder has an input draw of 50 amperes at the rated 230 volts, and uses a three prong plug. A standard clothes dryer is rated to draw a maximum of 30 amperes and uses a four prong plug. The four prong plug provides 110/120 volts to the controls while it is only the heating element using the 230 volts. The welder does not use 110/120 volts within its circuitry so requires only the three prong plug. Hence, there are two problems: the dryer circuit is limited by its maximum amperage to less than what the welder requires, and the plug configuration is different as different configurations denote different voltage and/or ampereage ratings, per NEMA. It would be dangerous to try and change plugs to run the welder on a dryer circuit.

Answer:

No you cannot use the dryer receptacle. This machine uses a 6-50P plug and requires a 6-50R receptacle. The receptacle is sold at most Canadian Tire stores however I cannot remember their product #.
