Great gun, but outdated
This gun is great. It shoots well and is durable. This is an older model now though. Look for the Tippmann 98 Custom Platinum with ACT tech. That one features a weaver rail on top and the ACT anti chop technology that prevents chopping balls when it's halfway in the feed. ie. almost completely eliminates ball chopping.
Verdict. Great gun, just go get the newer one.

Great for Beginners
The Tippman 98 Paintball Marker is a great starting marker for beginners who want to get into the sport. It is not a complex marker that is hard to setup or use. It is a very reliable marker that almost never breaks down if taken care of properly. The cleaning can be a pain; taking apart half the gun in order to clean it can be confusing. It is a very durable gun, so it can be put through a lot of environments without breakdowns. Tippman in general is the most well known company in the paintball industry and haven been since the beginning. The marker is a semi-automatic, which is one pull of the triggers fires on paintball. It is also very easy to upgrade if you wanted since Tippman is a very well known name. It is a very accurate marker as well, so I recommend this to beginners to the sport.

Great gun
Great gun for casual paintballing. Great for beginers as well. Bought on sale a few years ago. Put on a red dot sight and longer barrel. Gun is super accurate and works real well. Better than any other gun close to the same price range. A+

Good for beginners
Pros:
- EXTREMELY durable. Some of my friends ran one of these guns over with a 1/4 ton pickup truck. They are really tough.
- Easy to upgrade. This is probably the most commonly sold marker in the world, there are endless parts you can buy for it.
- Reliable. Generally Tippmanns are good at continuing to work for a long time.
Cons:
- Really annoying to clean. To take this gun apart you need to take out at least a half dozen bolts. This makes quick repairs, as well as cleaning the gun, a real pain.
- Heavy. The price you pay for durability is that this gun is not nearly as light as other markers.
Altogether, this is an excellent marker for beginners. It's hard to break, easy to upgrade, and should last a long time.

A good beginner
This is a good gun it is the standard rental at my local paintball place. It does the job well the hand grip is nice, accuracy is pretty average. Overall it's a good gun, but when played against other guns with hair triggers and such it's clearly outplayed a lot

excellent first time/casual use marker
If you are looking at getting your first paintball marker or one for casual use, this is the one to get. It is a breeze to field strip this marker right down and clean and oil it. This marker is very easily customized, the breech is easily accessible for cleaning, the threaded barrell makes for quick change and the rear sight is adjustable. An absolute gem.

Great Gun
Excellent paintball gun, powerful, durable, and very accurate. I have fired at least 10000 paintballs from it and not one broke in the barrel. Lots of room to customize and improve if you want a fully automatic.
Wait until the kit goes on sale before you buy...(40% off)
