Poor quality

"After 2 months of usage this bike has had the following problems:

- random flat tires on the back tire
- handlebars keep loosening even after having a bike shop fix them twice
- constant problem shifting gears

In this case, the price of this bike really does represent it's quality. Invest a little more money as this is a VERY poor quality bicycle, even for $100."

Great... for the price

"I've owned this bike for over two years, and in that time I've ridden it through rain, sunshine and snow, all 4 seasons.

-For the price, you get a complete 18 speed bicycle, ready for use in nearly all conditions, made with reasonable, if not spectacular quality

-The frame itself is quite durable and able to handle all kinds of abuse. I've crashed it once, it regularly hits high curbs a couple of times a day, goes through dirt and gravel and asphalt, and the real test came when I installed a rear carrier rack and my girlfriend sat on it for a combined 275 lb. on the bicycle, and we biked together around town whenever she came to visit. 2 years of that and still kicking. Beyond a slightly crooked rear wheel, nothing major structurally happened.

-Corrosion is a major issue with this bike. Just about every single screw, nut, fastener on this bike has rusted at this point (the frame doesn't suffer from these issues though). The other part that rusts rather easily are the wheels, and no matter how much I clean them off, polish them and wax them, they just continually rust. I noticed that this year's SC1800s have a different finish on the wheels from mine (mine were shiny, whereas the new ones have a dull finish), and some of the screws also seem to be of different quality, so I suspect that Supercycle might have done something about the corrosion issue. Regardless, if you plan to keep your bicycle outdoors or ridden through salty winters and often in the wet, be prepared to clean off the bike or suffer from the rust.

-The switchgear is terrible in terms of long-term durability. After an initial adjustment to my liking the bike seemed to work fine, and all was good for nearly 2 years. However, the freewheel developed a really annoying squeak and the bearing went bad, so I went ahead and replaced it with a generic Shimano. Then, a couple of weeks ago, the gear selector on the handlebar broke and I had to epoxy it back together to get the bike to shift and hold the gear I selected. The problem is that the internals of the switch is made of a metal spring... and surrounded by plastic. My suggestion for Supercycle is to not cheap out on the freewheel and especially the gear selector switch in future iterations of the bike as these are very important parts. The other annoying thing is that the chain sometimes slips after a gear change is made.

-The paint is semi-fragile. It doesn't rust or corrode but you will want to take extra care to make sure it doesn't get scratched. Or, like me, just wrap it in hockey tape/electrical tape. The blue paint is beautiful though, in my opinion!

-Comfort depends on your stature, but this bike is more mountain than commuter bike (duh). The crank is fairly high off the ground, so if I set the seat post to a height I'm comfortable with in terms of pedalling, I can barely get my feet to the ground when I'm stopped. Not a big deal and somewhat expected. The handlebars can easily be raised.

-Steel frame and fairly beefy/heavy wheels means that while it's almost unbreakable riding over any condition, the bike is also very heavy. It's a huge difference getting off this bike and getting on a lighter aluminum-framed bike with low-inertia wheels.

Overall, I am fairly satisfied with the bike. As a budget beater around a university campus, it is hard to find a better bike for cost-conscious students (and you would be crazy to bring a several hundred dollar theft magnet to these places), but it's also let down by corrosion and a few cheaped out parts. If Supercycle addresses these then the bike would be just about perfect."

Good enough for a basic bike

"A friend of mine who is about 6'1-6'2" bought this bike so he can bike with me. I used to have a similar old school all steel bike that's at least 8 years old. We only do casual biking (doing it for exercise and bike along paths instead of purely mtn bike trails. The bike handled pretty good and was subtantially better than my older bike. The seats definitely needed to be replaced (ended up getting a schwinn pillow top). My friend has had the bike for more than a year now and other than the pedals breaking (plastic pedals aren't meant for a 6'+ person @ 250 lbs)... the bike has performed admirably.

Contrary to most reviewers, if you take care of the bike and need it only for casual biking, then this should suffice. This is closer to a street bike rather than a mtn bike. Except for the fact that it has a steel frame and fat tires, it is comparable to a hybrid bike at about a quarter of the price. Most 18 or 21 speed mtn bikes have a smaller gear ring up front (the gear seat where the crank connects to). This makes the bike more suited for general use. Also, it has thumb shifters and NOT grip shifters (as the product description page states).

If you're just learning, need it for casual riding or just need a bike for general use, then this bike should work. If you're into mountain trails and rough biking, then look elsewhere."

Poor Bike - Do Not Buy

"I was looking for an inexpensive bike to take occassional rides. I thought this was it, although my subconsious was telling me not to buy it as you get what you pay for. I took this bike for my first ride, and within minutes it was not shifting properly, it would not shift in to the bigger sprocket, it was making all kinds of annoying sounds no matter how I tried to tweak the shifting levers, the back rim felt warped, the handlebars are crooked going into the stem, and if I pedalled with to much force, the chanin would slip on the back sprockets. I took it to my local Canadian Tire and they were great to fix it. The bike tech made all kinds of adjustments so it would shift properly, etc. The rim he said there was nothing he could do about, just cheap quality. Nothing he could do about the handle bars to.
Returned home and a week later went to take the bike for my second ride. Back tire was flat for no apparent reason. Worked and shifted good for about the first 5 minutes, then everything returned to work as stated above. This bike is a piece of junk. Do yourself a favour and buy a bike made of better quality. I'm going to try to return this bike and buy one of better quality."

Bike has Problems

"I received this bike as a gift back in April 2009, the bike ran fine for a couple months and had to take it in as the bike had its original steel rims, had to get them exchanged to the aluminum alloy rims as the steel was severely warped , and the steel rims were apparently recalled because of the warping issues, so I ran the bike again for 1 week and the hub the freewheel threads on to cracked, so took another trip and they replaced the rear wheel again, its been running fine until today, and the free hub pins gave out so in other words the rear wheel was not engaging when peddling, so I removed the rear wheel made sure the cones where tight and put it back on, and it is engaging again but taking half a pedal before read wheel engages, going to take the bike back tomorrow and have the rear wheel swapped out as it is a rear hub/wheel problem again, so to wrap this up, I have absolutely no problem with Canadian Tire honoring there warranty and replacing parts fast and efficiently , but the parts on the bike are border line junk/cheap, the frame is excellent durable, and the rims are not bad at all I would rate this product 4.5/10 low score due to consistant problems, I should not have to keep running it back ."

Low cost, below average quality

"Upon purchase, had to leave it in store for a week to get the front brake fixed - it was holding the front wheel. When I put it in my trunk to take it home, the car went through some small pothole on the road. At home, when I unloaded the bike saw the left shifter was broken. The shifters are made of very hard, fragile plastic. When riding the bike, the shifters are hard, and snap hard into position. I had a Huffy before and its shifters were much, much better. My daughter took it for a few rides, then the front brake cable got twisted and I had to adjust it, 'cause it won't release.

We have had the bike for less than a month. I am only hoping if we went on a trail with it - that it wouldn't fail in the middle of nowhere.

I could be wrong, or too apprehensive ( I hope I am); but so far the bike has been less than promising."

Solid Bike

"When I first bought this bike, I wasn't sure about it. I was having some problems with the gears, but all i had to do was bring it back to the CT repair shop where they repaired it for free covered under the warranty. After that it has been great, I use it for biking back and forth to school and work every day and it gets the job done. Great Bike!"

is this bike similar to a BMX

no not even close its much bigger and has gears whereas a BMX does not, also the geometry of the bike is not like one of a BMX

With a seat post adjustment and raising the handlebars, yes. It's well suited to those with longer legs

I think it will fit him, just have to adjust the seat, but do yourself and him a favor, buy a better quality bike. I bought one of these and it was a piece of junk.

Where can someone buy a replacement Thumb Shift Lever.

Question:

The 6 speed Thumb Shift Lever broke on my son's bike. Just wanting to know where I may buy a replacement. The local bike shops don't have anything like it.

Same thing happened to me on a cold weather ride.

Not under warranty since they were over a year out of the store.

Got these replaced through Quebec wholesaler of bike parts via local bike shop.

Try googling 6 speed thumb shifter if you continue to have trouble finding them locally.

Also turn up second hand sometimes.

Is the photo mixed up with the women's version of this bike?

Question:

Doesn't this one look more like a women's bike than the one in the photo for women? i.e. lowered frame bars in the center and red. The photo of the women's version has high frame bars and is blue. Is it really true?
