Good buy, good price

"Works fantastic. Started the roller and the backhoe with it today. Not good for the lifespan of the booster pack to start big diesel motors with it I'm sure, , but that's what I need it for and it works fine. I charged it overnight, even had it in my truck for another night, and still, worked fine. Granted, I had to let it charge the equipment for a minute or two, but that's to be expected at -15. The batteries were so dead they wouldn't even roll the engine over once. Looks a little cheaply made, but lots of features, and great price, a good buy for sure!"

First Boost = Fail

"Just got back from trying to boost a friend in the deep cold with the new booster pack. Was fully charged for more than the 36 hours recommended, about 72 actually and was stored in my trunk for only a few days before using the first time. This is the new model, connected to the dead battery, and it wasn't enough to get the car to turn over. On a whim I tried my old 600A rated powerbox that I planned to replace with this unit - it turned the car over on the first try. The output clearly isn't as much as the old 600A."

So far, so good

"I purchased one of these 2nd Gen booster packs recently. It was on sale for $99 and I've wanted one for a few months, as I work security, many times in the middle of nowhere sitting in my truck, and tired of draining my battery from having my laptop plugged in thru an inverter.

I figured this would relieve my battery of having to power my entertainment for 12hrs at a time, and if it's not doing all that extra work, the odds of needing to boost it are slim to none anyhow. Win-win. =)

So far, so good... I charged it for the 36 hrs immediately after purchase, just as it says to. I'll be taking it out with me tomorrow night to giv'er the official test. Everything seems to be good so far though. All indicators show that it's charged and ready, good to go.

I'll be rating it's performance after seeing how she works. For now, I'm loving it... keep looking over at it like it were a beautiful woman, but let's be honest... she really is beautiful, isn't she?

In my rating for "Quality", I gave it a 4, only because the battery clamps are plastic, but as long as it's taken care of, they should be just fine. Everything else seems to be a very deserving 5."

Works as expected, even on a dead battery.

"I checked my car battery voltage: 1.4V this morning. I charged the booster unit a few weeks ago - following the instructions. Today, before boosting, I flipped the large red switch to ON and measured the voltage on the charger - it was approx. 14V. Connected the charger to the battery and the engine started without any issues.

I think the 3.5V limitation mentioned in the older posts has been eliminated in the units with the big red "ON" switch.

Looks like I will keep this one.

Design Flaw Fixed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"I read all the reviews about this product # 011-1591-0 and I guess the designer must have listened!!!! Because the unit now has a huge red "manual power on/off switch" to deliver the full power of this battery to what ever you have it connected to. I was all ready to return the unit I bought and realized, "hey, there is no big red power switch on the pictured unit, but the stock number is the same. Then I realized, I got the new inproved second generation unit, hot of the shelf!!!! Lucky me!!!

So much for the problem of the 3.5 volt requirement the earlier first generation versions of the unit's had to have to make the unit work. This new generation now delivers full power when you turn the big switch!! I feel sorry for all you first generation buyers of this product.

To bad CT had not up dated the picture of this product # 011-1591-0 on the web site. It looks just awsome with the new big red power switch!!! I just bought the new second generation of this charger at the store in St Albert, AB on sale today for $89.99, a $60 saving!!!!!!

Trust me you will not be disappointed like all the poor people that got stuck with the first generation units.

But I must say, the clamps look a bit cheap, made 100% out of plastic except for the copper contacts. But I plan to put a decent set of metal copper clamps on the unit when the warranty runs out next year or if they break.

CT should really show an up-dated picture on the web site, and I bet these puppies will just blow out the door!!! St. Albert store had a ton of these on the shelf, lucky for me I stumbled on this deal. It was not advertised in the flyer!!! Check out my picture.

"Purchased it on Friday, instructions indicate to charge for 48 - 72 before 1st use. Plugged charger in, after 4-5 hours the charger was quite hot and after 24 hours cool and no longer charging.

The charge indicator indicated a low charge and in actual use there was no power whatsoever. The instruction booklet suggestd that either the battery or the charger is defective.

On Sunday I'll return it to CT

(I have another 700 amp CT charger with a black hard plastic case that I got 5 years ago and it has been great, just what you expect and is charged directly with 110 v rather than a small charger.)"

"Just spent $150 on this and returned it after trying to use it for the first time! 700A my left eye. I couldn't even get 1A out of it. Maybe it's the lemon i got, or maybe it's all of them. Gonna try another store for another unit as the store i got it from only had one in stock."

"I had one and I return it, because the power is switched after 20sec "automatically" IF THE LOAD is appropiate?! some voltage >8V, drain battery will not connect.
Other than that has plenty of gdgets [useless]"

"I have one of the aforementioned battery booster, and overall it does what it says. I have used it to boost my car before, and it did the job. The only problem is that once you use it to boost your car, it almost kills the battery completely.

So its good for a one-time boost, and after that make sure you recharge it. It takes a while to recharge this huge battery, and it can only be done through a 120V household outlet. It takes about 4-5 hours before the red charging light goes to green to indicate a full charge.

If you do happen to leave it, and are unsure of its charge level, it does have an indicator. Press a button, and it will tell you the percent (aprox) of charge it has left. The box says to do a recharge every 3 months, I would say don't leave it for any more than 1 month without a recharge.

So overall 4.5 / 5.0 as it does do what it says, but I wish it could do it more than once!"

Not a bad product

"Many of the reviewers state that they have defiective units because of it not charging or not holding a charge or taking too long to charge.

It is not the unit, it is the detachable light that comes with it that is defective and drains the unit. I was having the same problems as other users but as soon as I removed the light the problems of long charging and drained batteries was rectified. I figured I did not need the detachable light as I already had a flashight and a headlamp in my vehicle.

It is true it will not work with a totally dead battery so purchase one of the powerboxes instead, if you that is a serious concern that you will encounter a dead battery more often than a weak battery. There is a way to bypass the safety feature to jump a completely dead battery, if you look on the web, but I would only do it if it was my last option.

Otherwise for very weak batteries this unit will start larger engines V6 and V8 with ease. I used to have the 300 amp powerbox unit, and it would not start my V6 when the battery was very low, this unit starts my car without issues.

The quality of this unit (clamps and wires and fit and finish) are no where as good as my old 300 amp unit. But when this unit goes on sale it is a good deal.

I chose this unit as it was smaller than the ones with the inverters and compressors built in and had a lot more cranking power for its size. I keep a seperate inverter and compressor in the car which though not as convenient gives me more flexibility.

I would have bought the 600 amp powerbox (my brother has one), as it is an excellent and versitile unit but is a bit larger and you have to plug the clamp cables into the unit to use it. I considered that unit but I had limited room in my car and had a compressor and small inverter already."

Answer:

Buy the new designed unit with the big red power switch, 011-1591-0, same product number, but now comes with a maual power switch.

Don't waste your time on a new battery, I picked up one for $89.99, a $60 dollar saving at the St Albert CT store.

Answer:

Not sure what size battery came in this unit. Canadian Tire carrys a 18 Ah battery for about $50. I find it's usually as cheap just to buy a whole new unit when it goes on sale.

This is NOT a charger, this is an emergency power-pack that should be used carefully to start your car or provide electrical power. Is great for battery boost and many of my friends are using it for camping electrical power.

Answer:

The Auto Parts department at Canadian Tire can special order a 22Ah sealed lead acid battery from their car battery supplier. However, my experience is that replacement batteries cost almost as much as a new booster pack (if you pick one up on sale). My guess is a replacment 22Ah battery will probably run you $60-80.

No, this booster cannot operate a 120 amp electric winch.

Answer:

If the winch has a 12V accessory-style plug (or you've rigged one), yes you can.

Keep in mind, these booster packs are primarily for boosting - they don't have deep cycle batteries in them. The more often you deep discharge and recharge them, the shorter the battery life will be.
