best oil for winter

"i use 0w-30 oil for winter here on all my vehicles. they really help cold starts in -30'c weather. Also look for the ones made in Germany. This oil is approved by BMW, VW, Benz and Porsche."

Meets VW 502.00, 503.01, 505.00 STDs

"I've been using the German Castrol 0W30 in my '10 GTI (2.0T). Great oil at sale price 6.99.

Was using factory oil until 5k (not full synth. Syntec 5W40). Oil change each 5k since....

My car doesn't burn oil, runs smooth, starts great in winter and fuel consumption is also great (8.2 l/100 mixed).

I can only recommend this oil (only the 0W30). For the rest of the weigh, you can get better oil elsewhere for Goupe IV synthetic."

Meets Mercedes MB 229.3 and MB 229.5 standard.

"This is a great product and is imported from Germany. This oil meets Mercedes MB 229.3 and MB 229.5 motor oil standard. This is the motor oil and weight used across Europe in BMW's, Mercedes and VW's.

Although this is great stuff its availability makes it only a decent choice. This motor oil is only sold at Canadian tire in Canada. As most Mercedes require 8.5 quarts of oil I usually buy 10 bottles at a time. Many times I've have to drive out to multiple Canadian tire stores just to make sure I have enough oil to do an oil change. Luckily in the Vancouver area there are many Canadian tires stores.

I still prefer Mobil-1 0w40 as a first choice for Mercedes and BMW due to its wide availability. But this stuff is almost just as good. Not a bad second choice, especially if its on sale."

German Castrol 0w-30 FTW!

"As mentioned by others, most of the Castrol synthetics are just semi-syns, as are most all other advertised synthetics such as Mobil1 etc; Clue that the GC is true synthetic? it's 0W rating, no conventional or semi-syn can reach that rating.Been using the GC 0w30 in my Mazda now for 66k, oil change intervals of 12k, coming around to the 150k mark; Engine runs smooth as silk, extremely clean and burns not a drop of oil.Cold starts are not a problem and GC offers the best protection of any oil for cold starts...I expect with this oil my engine will probably outlast the body.GC goes on sell periodically such as now and for $6.99 a litre, it's just about the best deal going for such an exceptional oil, bar none."

"I bought an old Ford Escort last year that had been sitting for a few years. After an oil change with the regular stuff, there was still a lot of sludge forming in the top part of the engine which led to oil pressure loss. I thought it needed major repairws, but decided to do the oil change again and this time try Syntec. The difference was astronomical. The engine ran smoother and quieter and never developed an oil pressure problem again. Been using it ever since!"

NOT a full synthetic

"I've noticed that a lot of people assume that this is a full synthetic oil. It is not. It is a group 3 oil meaning it is a beefed up dino oil with additives etc. If you want/need a full syn, look elsewhere! It's priced the same as other full synthetics, so not too sure why anybody would buy this stuff knowing it's not the real deal.
However, further confusing the price of this stuff is the fact that the 0w30 (and ONLY the 0w30) Syntec is a full synthetic... the rest are not. Note that the 0w30 is made in Germany the rest is made in USA. Confusing indeed.

Spend the same $ on something else and get better oil. Simple as that."

Good for bathroom fan

"I put a few drops of the Castrol Syntec 5W30 in my bathroom fans 4 years ago and the fans are still running very quite.
I also tried the regular 5W30 in my other bathroom fan and the noise came back after 3 months.
I am currently using Castrol Syntec oil for my car."

Answer:

In North America, you can call Group 3 oil "synthetic".

Group 3 oil is standard oil but more refined and with some additives.

Group 4 is a pure synthetic oil and only Castrol Syntec 0W30 is part of this group. It's begin made in Germany. Examine the readings on the bottle and you will find it different from the other weighs.

0W30 oil gets a 0 weighting at 0 celcius, which is great for winter, and 30 weigh at normal operating temperature. But this oil is almost 40 at start and keeps his weigh better than many other oil (doesn't shear).

Answer:

Yes it is. If you look at the back of the bottle it even states that this oil meets engine requirements of Mercedes 229.3 and 229.5. These standards can only be met with a pure synthetic oil.

This oil is specially imported from Germany.

Answer:

The Castrol Syntec 0W-30 (from Germany) is the only real synthetic motor oil.
If you are going by group IV base stock oils.

If you want a 5W-30 PAO (Polyalphaolefin) based synthetic motor oil:
Get the Castrol Edge 5W-30.

Answer:

It is a GpIII oil which in North America can be called a synthetic. This includes "synthetic" offerings from Pennzoil, Quaker State and Mobil 1, or so I have read. 0W30 Syntec is a GpIV and concidered a synthetic in the rest of the world. True synthetic oils (GpIV & V) include most Amsoil products, Red Line and Royal Purple to name a few.

Answer:

Nope! Not unless you're buying the 0w30 (note that the 0w30 is made in Germany while all other viscosities are made in USA).

The 0w30 is a Group 4 oil and is fully man-made.
All the rest of the Syntec line is a Group 3 oil which is basically a modified dino oil. It'll be far superior to regular non-synthetic oil, but if you're spending 10 bucks a L, you should not consider this brand. Mobil 1, Amzoil, Royal Purple... whatever (there are plenty more). It makes sense to get a Group 4 full synthetic if you're paying for it.

I'm a Mobil user now, and was previously a Castrol Syntec user because Audi recommends it (meaning they have some kind of deal/arrangement with Castrol). Audi 1.8T engines are notorious for sludge problems, and I truly feel it's a result of dealers using and recommending a Group 3 oil when a Group 4 is what should be used in a turbocharged engine (especially when they are telling people to change it every 15k -- insane!).
