Some serious flaws

"A very odd design here, the LCD shuts off when it is heating the room. This makes setting up the thermostat quite annoying.
I program the day and time and then temperature and as soon as I finish the info for the current day, the thing decides to turn on the heat. This would normally be correct and desired except now, the LCD goes dead... You then have to wait a few minutes for it to stop the heat cycle and the LCD to reappear before you can finish programming it. If you're not fast enough, too bad, no more screen again while the next cycle kicks in. WHY OH WHY would you design it like this...
This also means that walking by it and looking for the time or temp means you'll most likely see a blank screen throughout the cold months. Add in the lack of a backlight rendering it unreadable unless brightly lit and you get a whole lot of blank looks.

I had the clock reset itself 4 times in the first couple days which I tolerated due to claims on this review site that it took some time to "charge" its battery... the best part is that the resetting clock lets you play the game of trying to program it between heat cycles again.

I've now had it for 10 days, and once the annoying programming task was done it did its job great. Until today. Woke up, the screen was mostly blank except for some random bits of the LCD (see pic). The thermostat is unresponsive and my heater is not on.
Even if the freeze up is a one off issue, I'm not impressed with the disappearing screen behaviour. This thing is going back for a competitors product which is too bad because the price and functionality of it seemed like it would be perfect"

Bad design or bad batch

"I installed 3 of those units in my home and they have been nothing but trouble. First problem is that the internal battery, which runs the controller of this thermostat, takes forever to charge (i.e. more than 48hrs). This is frustrating as I cannot program this thing to do anything or it will turn off as soon as the heater kicks in.

When this happens it gets stuck in heating mode and the only option is to reset. If you reset during a period where the factory settings are set to have the heater active you're forced to pull it off the wall and disconnect the wires because the it shuts off when the heater runs and is stuck with heater on.

I'm sure this would be a fantastic unit if it was designed properly (i.e. charge the internal battery faster). Also, none of the units back lighting work, even after 48hrs. Maybe I got units from a defective batch but I'm more inclined towards it being a poor design.

I'll give it an other 48hrs for that slow battery to charge, if it doesn't stop behaving like this or I don't see a back lighting, it's going back. All of them.

BTW, I called Garrison tech support numerous times, every single time it rang until I got a voicemail. No service, bad product, it's not looking good. Only reason why I am giving it a chance is because it was a good deal and I have a faint hope they will eventually work.

Either way, it's not getting more than 2 stars for all the grief it's given me so far."

"Great Thermostat...Note that this one can handle up to 4000 W and most other can only handle 3000W max. In a big room you make have over 3000W. To know each ft of baseboard is equal to 250W."

Great buy

"I bought and installed 3 of these thermostats recently. The installation was simple as was the programming of the various functions. The overall ease of use is quite simply impressive and the units are accurate with excellent programability. The 7-day programming really make temperature control a piece of cake and allows for an easy way to reduce energy consumption in the home. Paired up with convection heaters, they really do an awsome job. I cannot wait for them to go on sale again to pick up a few more and switch my entire home over to these thermostats."

"my only complaint would be for a better back-light otherwise this is a great unit. you can program 7 individual days with 4 programs for each day. the unit is very accurate and I really like that the unit will modulate the output of the baseboard heater in increments of 10% so you don't need to have it totally on or off. the usage monitor function is also nice so you can track daily and weekly usage."

TOU pricing compatible?

Question:

I need to find a programmable thermostat that would be compatiable with the TOU pricing coming into effect in Ottawa soon. This will require a change to the set temperature seven times during each weekday. Anyone know if one exists yet? Thanks.

Answer:

No, Time of Use Pricing is 3 pricing levels, and there are 4 occurences per day (not 7!).

Are you proposing to compromise your family's comfort because of the TOU pricing? Whether it's programmed into a thermostat, or done manually by a family member that turns down the heat to save money, both will result in a colder, more unpleasant home. The peak hours occur when most people are in the house and need the heat. Programmable thermostats are excellent for reducing costs provided nobody is home!

The solution isn't a programmable thermostat, but an alternate lower-cost heating source, but there are none good enough to provide Canadians with enough heat to be happy. All heating sources have major problems (pollution, uncontrolled future costs, etc.). Electrical heat is one of the best compromises we have, however.

Answer:

The thermostat listed below has 4 program settings per day (morning, day, evening and night) which will accommodate the different TOU periods – On Peak, Mid Peak and Off Peak.

In winter, the 4 settings can be programmed to accommodate the 4 TOU periods:
P1: Morning - On Peak
P2: Day – Mid Peak
P3: Evening - On Peak
P4: Night - Off Peak

In summer, the 4 settings can be programmed to accommodate the 4 TOU periods:
P1: Morning – Mid Peak
P2: Day – On Peak
P3: Evening – Mid Peak
P4: Night - Off Peak

Note: Weekends are always Off Peak.

Why does the LCD display fade out when the thermostat activates the heater on full power ?It doesn't do it with the heater slightly.

I just installed these model NOMA 52-2545-8 and all eight are behaving the same way.

Answer:

The unit has a charging circuit that takes two day to fully charge. The company failed to inform customers in the manual about this fact. Being a retired electrician, this was the thing I had been looking for. My load was 12.5 amps. I knew after an hour that I had a problem on my hand. The unit produced to much heat. Six weeks later the unit died. My guess is, the heatsink, which had a lot of surface area, did not have enough meat on it to properly get rid of the heat.

Answer:

I had the same problem and accepted the answer given that it was designed this way but this is incorrect. It simply needs time to charge the battery and works the very best now.

PS i would how ever recommend that you do not run 4000 watts on it as i tested at 17.7 amps with 4000 and it is only rated for 16.6.

Answer:

It does this to prolong the screen life, and since there is a draw through the thermostat to support the number of watts on the heater, the screen will fade out during the heating process and come back to normal once the set temperature is met.

What heat cycle option should I use ?

Question:

In option settings, in the manual it states Cr0 Full Power No Cycle( for fan assisted baseboards and electric heating devices. Does this mean that electrical heating devices is fan assisted also?

Answer:

Cr0 is intended to be set for heating devices with fans.
If you use Cr1 or Cr2 the fan will continually cycle on and off. That would be annoying to say the least.
