Great little heater

"Bought this heater for the ensuite bathroom located over unheated space - it's the perfect size for this room! And, because there are no moving parts, we can't hear it in the bedroom. Into our third season using the heater and the switch failed. Went to a local electronics store for a new switch for less then $3 and had the heater back up and running in no time!"

Keeps breaking.

"I purchased this heater and the switch burned out after a few months. Took it back and got a replacement but it only lasted a few month before its switch burned out. Not recommended."

Worst Purchase Ever: Almost No Heat

"This heater should not be sold in Canada. I feel almost no heat generated even at max power. It feels like my laptop heats the room more. This heater is only useful it is 20 degrees outside, and you like to feel half a degree warmer. Or if you want to waste electricity. DON'T BUY!!"

Leaked oil after a year of use!

"Bought the unit on sale and pretty much got one year out of it before we had to take it to the dump. Leaked oil after a year of barely being used. Lucky for us we had it in the bathroom on tile floor so the clean up was easy and floor not damaged! First suspected something was wrong with unit when we started noticing a funny smell... took us three days to actually connect the dots and realize that perhaps the heater was leaking oil. Yet another disappionting purchase from Canadian Tire!"

Great for a small space ... until it dies

"I bought one of these on sale less than a year ago to heat a small (<100 sq ft) unheated porch in my house during the winter months (i.e., Oct-Mar). I have an old house so this was a good choice due to its lowish power consumption that I knew would not overload my wiring. The heater kept my porch warm enough to be useable until it died today after only a few months of operation. Unfortunately I did not keep my receipt so I guess I'll have to buy a replacement at a different store. Even at the low price I paid I do not consider this heater to be fair value because it is now headed to the landfill after less than a year of use."

Splended little heater to keep the chill off

"This is a great little heater, which we use to help keep the chill out of the air during the colder winter days/nights.

Although you don't feel the heat radiating off the heater directly (unless you're standing right next to it), we have noticed that the furnace doesn't kick in as often when we have it running in our living room or bedroom.

The low power consumption is a great feature and would allow the heater to run off of our solar back-up generator for some time if there was ever a black-out.

Work best in smaller rooms. Not something you'd find useful in a large rec-room or a living room with vaulted ceilings."

LIKEWISE MINI OIL HEATER

"Bot on sale in Fall 09, to supplement heat in living room and hallway (main source of heat - woodstove). Performed well for it's "mini" size. Had to return it 3 months later as the plastic around the screws in the bottom of the handle piece disintegrated which made the handle and front piece unstable and fall off - had picked it up and moved it a total of 3 times.
Traded up to the larger Noma, on sale also - white with 2/4/8 hour timer (no remote) and absolutely love it. The little one is good, but the larger one is way better."

Room was colder, room now warmer!

"It's small but it's efficient and it does the job. We had a cold room and bought this as a supplemental heater.
It has all you need for the price. So if you're looking for some powerful heating then this isn't for you - spend the money and get something bigger."

problem with switch

"My parents got one last fall, and we got one this winter. Both units have defective switch by now. I have noticed other people also complained about same defect. I will buy another brand and return this one."

Can I buy replacement on-off switch?

Answer:

No. The manufacturer don't seem to have a website. The heater used to be called Lancaster, but Likewise bought it over -- according to a lady working at Canadian Tire. Googling for either of the names, or even the product number 43-5837, only returns Canadian Tire hits.

It seems that the on/off switch is the weakest point in this product.

But I guess you *can* get a new switch for $49.99. As a bonus you'll get the rest of the new heater. :-(

Does this 550W Oil Heater saves on hydro compared to my 1000W baseboard Heater?

Question:

My concern is whether will this 550W heater at MED setting consumes more hydro than my room's 1000W baseboard heater at 1/3 setting ?

Answer:

Oil heaters are more efficient since they retain heat even when off - therefore the heater is still pumping out heat while the element is off.

Whereas with a baseboard heater, heat is dissipated immediately.

However, this heater is very weak (even though its rated at 550w), therefore you will probably be disappointed with the performance of the heater in comparison to your 1000w baseboard heater.

No. Watts tells you how good it is at heating. The only increase in efficiency you can with electric heaters is to improve the delivery, mainly, get the heat more directly onto you. Electric warming blankets for example will deliver the heat directly to you, so you use less power to make yourself warmer.

This is a distribution problem. You need a fan to circulate the air - very well documented fact that a ceiling fan in reverse helps save energy. The baseboard is by the window to help counter the inefficiencies of the window also (old/cheap windows are drafty).

Yes. Like I said above, the more direct the delivery of the heat, the better.

No, the heat it's giving you once turned off is energy already used. This also makes the heater slower - it has to heat the oil first. It's better generally to have more even heat, and the oil does help with that.

The above answer is correct. The only way this heater might save any energy is it could be closer to YOU, so you might not turn it on as much. If you are trying to warm the room to an even temperature, then they will use the same amount of energy.

Answer:

All electric heaters are 100% efficient. They all cost the same amount to run to heat the same space to the same temperature.

The 500W heater will take twice as long to heat the space but will cost 1/2 as much per hour. In the end it costs the same.

100% of the electricity sent into an electric heater (of any type) goes into heat so you will not save anything by changing.

Answer:

The oil is permanently sealed inside, so it shouldn't ever need to be replaced or refilled.

If the heater starts leaking (I would think only severe damage would do this) you should bring it to a service center as described in the user manual.
