Ok for now, but expensive to operate

"I have used my unit for most of this past summer in mosquitoville Canada (Edmonton). The unit worked well, but I am dismayed at the cost of the replacement cartridge and fly trap paper.
In two months on the lowest setting (we have a small back yard), we used a full tank of propane and a cartridge ($29.99) and a fly trap sticky refill (2 for $29.99). so far I have not had any of the operating plroblems mentioned by other reviewers."

Very good results

"Bought this 5 days ago, We live in town and this year was the worst I have ever seen for mosquito's. We put in a pool but needed to get control of our yard so tryed this unit. We can't believe how many bugs we have caught already. Kids are able to use the pool with no bug issues. Been great so far. We walk down the street and turn around and come right back to our yard."

3 frustrating years of poor performance, high cost

"It's easy to say great things about this product when you first get it going out of the box.
After my first propane refill: it wouldn't start again.
It randomly started and worked two more tanks.
It catches lots of mosquitoes when it works, but the chemical lure and sticky paper is way too expensive for the hassles you have to put up with.
Fourth refill, wouldn't start. Manufacturer sent me a whole new unit, FREE from USA.
Wow! Great service eh?
Original unit randomly started again and worked one more season.
No body tells you the tiny brass gas line filter rusts and plugs, causing misfires.
Take the filter out and/or try to clean it with a brass brush and unit may start again.
Third season now: igniter wouldn't work on my original unit, called manufacturer again.
Manufacture confirms that the entire unit is UNSERVICEABLE, but they will send a new gas line filter for $25. No thanks.
I recently tried that brand new replacement unit they sent me (never used yet) and guess what? The igniter is clicking away, I can smell gas and hear it, but it WON'T IGNITE - it's never been used.
So, I have $50 worth of sticky paper and lures, but nothing to use them in.
I WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER ONE, NOR RECOMMEND IT to anyone. The price you pay for this device is not worth the unpredictable hassles.

PS For sale: sticky paper and octenol lure still in packages."

"Have only had it for this summer but it seems to be working fine. My bottle of propane seems to last at least the 21 days if not longer only draw back is the price of the sticky sheets."

Excellent product!

"We have been using it for 2 years now - it works like a charm in our backyard; please see the attached picture taken today - one week after I changed the sticky trap. We tried a number of products last year when we could not stay in our backyard for more than a few minutes without getting bitten. This was the only product that worked - it took a few weeks to reduce the infestation down to the level that we could sit in the backyard. We turned it on late April this year and it has worked great so far. We could sit in the deck and our 2.5-year-old can run around in the backyard without the fear of getting bitten. I agree with other reviewers that the usage/maintenance (for gas tank re-fill and changing trap) is somewhat expensive, but it is worth the cost...I just hope that it works the same way in coming years...."

Works .... for a while .. too much $ for so little

"like other reviews here, when it works, it makes a real difference. However, it doesn't last! I had a 35 model that stopped working after a year, this model died within warranty and I got a replacement, but it died shortly after the warranty was up. This unit is expensive enought to run when it works (and if it would keep working, it would be worth it), but replacing it every season is unreasonable."

Bad manufacturer service

"Mine just went off warranty and quit working. The $5.00 igniter crystallized and they don't sell a replacement. They informed me that I have to replace the entire $300 unit."

"first week not much action,the occasional fly,week 2 the thing is covered,the kids don't get bites any more,heck there were even spiders stuck to it and some crafty ones made a web on the botton and had a lot of flies again....will never be with out skeeter vav again"

Most excellent Product

"Bought this product in April and put it in our yard. I live on the greenbelt close to wetlands. We cannot go outside after 6:30 or the kids are eaten alive. It attracted some mosquitos at first but nothing that I was impressed with. Just as I was ready to return it my husband said just wait a few weeks. We are now the end of June and high temperatures. If I didn't see it with my own eyes I wouldn't have believed it!!! The sticky pad was full. We changed it and within 24 hours the pad was completly full again. It has attracted and caught thousand of sqeeters. I took pics of course. Last night we sat outside (for the first time in 4 years) until 10:30. I totally recommend this product to anyone who has sqeeter issues and just be patient, IT DOES WORK."

Still going.....

"This will be our 3rd year using this unit. The sticky paper does get a little expensive although you will use less every year. First run of the year I use the Octenol attractant and leave it out for the rest of the year. Also replace the battery for the starter at the beginning of the year. Only a couple of mosquitos seem to be able to avoid it...my front yard is full of them.

If this is the price I have to pay to be able to enjoy my yard with the kids, it is well worth it."

Extended warranty

Everything I have read about this product is usually positive, however the next thing that i noticed on all the review sites is to "make sure, 100%" to purchase the extended warranty. Is this something that is offered?

Canadian Tire usually has a good warranty on most products. I am not sure what, if any, products you can purchase an extended warranty on.
I assume people are telling you to get an extended warranty because they have heard about the recurring problem of trying to re-ignite this model after periods of non-use.
After speaking with Blue Rhino about it, I learned that a small brass mesh fuel line filter needs to be cleaned or replaced to solve the problem.
No need to try and find an extended warranty if you ask me.
I will post the question and answer with pictures for everyone to see.

Mine was missing that piece too. I just called Bluerhino and they said the SV-15 doesn't come with that wave drawer. The unit looks like there is supposed to be one. The rep said that the larger units that have a fan in them use that trap.

Why are the Sticky paper refils and the Bait no longer available on line?

how long does the propane tank last??

Usage is always on if you want it to work. My personally lasts about 35 days per fill. The first sticky paper normally gets swapped out after 2 weeks, then every 4-6 weeks after that. I leave the attractant cartridge in for the whole summer

The manufacture brochure on the SkeeterVac SV-15 Eliminator suggest that the propane tank last about 28 days and at that time (28 days) you need to change the sticky collar as well as the propane tank. The Octenol cartridge last 2 months according to the manufacture's brochure on the product.

Call the company blue rhino-they have a website. Ask for a fuel line filter and they will explain how to change it-it's very easy and solves the problem usuallly. Change filter every time you change the tank.
