"I've had this model now since January 2004 and would give it a so-so review.

The handles flex quite a bit --- so much so that eventually one of the bolts came loose that hold the handles to the gear housing. The nuts are welded to the inside so I had to replace the broken one with a lock nut. Eventually two others came off the next winter.

Like with all snow blowers you have to be careful with the electric start. Do it too long and the gears will break off of it. Yep, did that.

Living near North Bay it's often quite cold during the winter months. The chute angle cable snapped one frigid day right where it joins the plastic adjuster on the handle.

The metal housing around the augers is somewhat thin. If you have a gravel driveway like we do and the skid plates stick in, the metal bends inwards a bit. The metal isn't as solid as the old snow blowers from 25 years ago!

And most recently I realized that if the oil level is even just a hair below the "add" mark --- the engine will seize. Yes, stupid on my part that I did not check it after using it a few times but I'm surprised that at a little bit below "add" that the engine would seize.

The engine seized is my fault. But the other minor things I'm not going to take blame for so I think that MTD could build these things a bit more robustly.

It never blew a belt and the engine always had pretty decent power for blowing snow --- and we have a long lane way (about 150 yards long) and it did the job quite well.

So now I'm off to Canadian Tire to look at some snow blowers again. But I'm going to stay away from MTD just due to the minor things listed above. Especially the flexing handles. That bothered me."

First Time Snowblower Owner - I Am Pleased

"Today I bit the bullet and bought my first snow blower. Once again the forecasters were predicting today's storm to be the worst in X number of years and so far it has not really panned out, however we did get enough that I decided to stop relying on the next door neighbour to blow out the lane. Coincidentally I am home all day because the roads and visibility are not great. So, long story short I saw this one on sale and the local store had five in stock. I brought mine home un-assembled and had it running in about ten minutes.

My particular unit appears to have had an engineering change to the chute rotating mechanism. Both the online picture and the in-store demonstrator model use a cork screw type adjusting rod that turns the plastic chute's plastic ring gear at the bottom of the chute. I saw this in the store and instantly understood why people had problems with it. When I assembled mine I realized MTD has completely revised this design to something that uses a gearbox with an actuator that pushes the chute side to side. The chute moves easily and my first impressions are it should be robust.

I spent about 40 minutes clearing my laneway and that includes cutting back the end on both sides where Mr. Plow has been filling it in since December. The snow is fairly dry and this unit blows it a good 30 feet away. The chute deflector does indeed keep adjusting itself upward as someone else already mentioned, probably because the tightening handle won't stay tight. A lock washer will solve this.

Overall, I am impressed with my purchase. At $849.99 it gives me a bigger engine than the next unit down and only increases the path from 24" to 26" . This is what I wanted - more power to move almost the same amount of snow should throw that snow further. It certainly works for me."

The toughest snow blower you will ever buy

"I bought this snow blower 4 years ago since then I had absolutely no problem with it at all. In the 4 Canadian winter I use it I only had to fix one pin cost me 1$. It starts every time with out one problem I was surprise how well it works in 4 feet of snow and how well the engine runs. It those 4 extreme winters I had to remove snow from 2 big propriety a few time per week so it was use a lot. I was using it in the most extreme weather -35 Celsius for hours and it still runs with out a problem. All the gears work with out a problem and I specially like how the tires have such great traction's. So to say the least this snow blower is a beast it will never let you down in the harshest weather. ( sorry for my bad English)"

Would not turn left or right

"Canadian Tire just delivered it. I opened the box. Made the minor assemble and wanted to move the machine left or right in a circle. It does not move, may be there is something I am doing which is not right. After putting in forward or reverse gears it only goes straight forward or straight back but does not turn. Please let me know it there is something which needs to be done to make this monster move left and right in a circle so that I can easily place it in my garage.

Great Machine

"I couldn't ask for a better machine.
Moved from Toronto to Innisfil in October-2008.
My driveway is not that big (but to big to clean the snow by hand) I could fit easy 6 cars, tightly 9 cars, 3 side by side.
Decided to buy this Snowthrower and oh boy!!
Was I happy I did...cleaned the driveway in about 10-15 minutes depending how fast I was going.
Never once I used the electric starter, on the first pull started right away.
Definitely would recommend the Snowthrower to all my friends."

Good+ Machine, Good Price

"Bought this in November 2008, and have used it solidly since. (Had to - Barrie in snow belt area). Using it for a double-long double-wide driveway and sidewalks, and helping out neighbours.
I had the larger machine (3754, 10.5 HP) for 7 years, but found it's larger/heavier frame unwieldy compared to this one. Gave the larger machine to my son.
A few cautions:
- the upper and lower handles would not stay tightly joined, especially the left. Used lock washers, no more problem
- two over-sized wing nuts ("mounting screws" in the manual) hold the cover ("snow hood") over the spark plug area. Both of these worked loose and fell off before I noticed. Luckily, I was able to find both. Again, lock washers needed
- because of the above, I'm a lot more cautious about making sure all nuts/ bolts/ screws etc are tight before each use
- am now looking into getting a replacement upper chute/deflector to replace a broken one.
Would still heartily recommend this unit..."

Good Machine Good Price

"We bought this at the beginning of the winter and are so glad to have it. It has worked great for us and is easy to handle. Cuts through even hard blown in snow and is a perfect size for doing both our large driveway and our side walks and patio as well. I appreciate having the electric start, even though we have only needed to use it once. Having the speed options with a reverse is great. Overall a great machine and the perfect size for us."

"Bought this last year, have a long driveway and it hasn't had a problem, adjusted the belt once and broke a shear pin on darned branch. Otherwise it's easy for me to handle and saves me a lot of work! Size is great for doing pathways around the house too. Have only used the electric start once!"

snow no blower

"Used this snow blower twice. the third time the auger stopped working. The belt broke.
I owned the snowblower less than a month and I now have to put out $125.00 for repair.
I am not impressed with this model or warranty."

Great Machine!

"I have had this blower for 4 winters now and couldn't be happier with it.
The tires grip very well, the adjustments are easy to make and I haven't found snow that it couldn't go through yet (and I live were we get plenty of snow). It even makes short work of the hard-packed snowbanks.
The only problem my machine has had was that the gear shifter shook itself loose and went into the wrong gear. However, it was easy to tighten up and has not been an issue since.
The 4 year warranty is a great bonus, but I haven't needed to use it.
This was easily one of the best purchases I've ever made."

what type oil is best recommended? i bought Castrol GTX SAE 5W-30

SAE 5W30 is the recommended oil for our snow throwers.

Castrol GTX would be a good choice. In extreme cold conditions (ie -30C to-40C) where snow throwers are stored outside an SAE 0W30 would be a good alternative.

Yes, this model uses 12" stamped steel serrated augers to gather snow into the housing where a high speed second stage impellor throws it out.
6 forward speeds and a 21" intake height help this unit make quick work of the deepest snowfalls.

This snowthrower engine comes from the factory pre-filled with SAE 5W30 winter oil.
Always check the engine oil level before operating power equipment.
For all 4-cycle gas snowthrowers it is recommended to perform an oil change after the first five hours of use, and then once per season.
