Dethatch

Thatch is a layer of partially-decomposed organic matter such as roots, stems and leaves that develops between the soil and the turf. It provides an environment in which insects can thrive, and also harbours organisms that cause disease in plants. Thatch also causes dry spots and can weaken turf.

How-to

Keep your soil pH balanced to ensure that excess acidity doesn't slow the rate of thatch decomposition.

• Remove built up thatch by using a manual dethatching rake, an electric dethatcher, or by attaching a universal dethatching blade to your mower.
• Proper fertilizer application and watering can also help remove build up of thatch.
• Water infrequently, but deeply, to help ensure balanced turf growth and thatch decomposition.
• Generally, watering is not recommended in the fall, unless it is exceptionally dry. However, you should not let your lawn become too dried out, as it must be healthy and green in the fall to survive the winter.
