What to consider when buying a treadmill

Who will be using the treadmill and how often?

If intended for regular workouts or multiple users, look for a more powerful motor and longer warranty

How much do you want to spend?

By spending more, you may get:

  • A quieter, more powerful motor
  • A larger walking/running surface
  • More add-on functions
  • More programs
  • A longer warranty

What will you be doing when you work out?

If you watch TV or read during your workouts, a more powerful motor means the treadmill runs more quietly

Is space a concern?

  • Most treadmills can be folded
  • Higher-quality machines include "lift assistance" - hydraulic shocks that make it easier to lift and lower the treadmill

Treadmill Anatomy

  • Motor - The larger and heavier the motor, the more durable the treadmill. Look at the Continuous Duty rating, where the higher the rating, the more powerful and quiet the treadmill will be. Continuous Duty is the maximum horsepower the motor can deliver 24 hours a day without overheating.
  • Horsepower (HP) - Measurement of power of treadmill motor.
  • Incline - Treadmill incline raises running surface to simulate walking or running up a hill so you burn more calories and increase muscle tone. Most models offer a powered incline.
  • Deck/Belt - The thicker the deck, the more cushioning and comfort it offers to your legs/joints. Belt widths range from 16" to 20", while lengths vary from 45" to 55".
  • Cushioning System - A treadmill should offer cushioning and support that feels firm, not bouncy.
  • Speed - Most treadmills offer speed setting from 0 to 10mph.
  • Electronic Controls - Range from simple odometer and speedometer to pre-programmed workouts and storage capabilities. Electronic controls can provide feedback such as speed, distance, heart rate, pace, calories burned, laps taken, time elapsed, incline and more.
  • Frame - The frame should feel durable and stable.
  • Folding Treadmills - Look for stability, ease of folding, weight capacity and how easy it is to move.

Treadmills feature a frame-motor-parts-labour manufacturer's warranty.
Frame: Entire metal base frame of the treadmill
